than two years the majority of members are in their 20s 30s and 40s ex plained valerie gram a past president of the chapter and now a member of newcomers alumni there are seven newcomer groups in the metro toronto area including clubs in thornhill don mills scarborough mississauga and newmarket the markham chapter continues to increase in size annually in relationship to the expanding community though the club is restricted to women both married and single spouses are encouraged to join their wives in a variety of activities including supper club theatre club amateur chefs couples club the lunch bunch bridge and bowling newcomers meets monthly at participation house located on the ninth line just north of hwy 7 they allow the membership use of their auditorium and meeting rooms at no charge with many clubs it is hard to get space on a regular basis let alone without charge were very fortunate mrs gram said women are able to belong to newcomers for a maximum of three years before advancing to newcomers alumni a spinoff group where you can stay as long as you wish though the two groups get together during the year for several mixed activities alumni meetings are seperate from newcomers as are their activities last year membership in alumni jumped to over 100 a substantial rise from previous years because bylaws were changed alumni was strictly open to newcomers moving up the ladder explained mrs gram fn the last few years there were so many requests to open the club membership to others who for example may have lived here for a couple years never bothered to join newcomers because they worked fulltime and are now at home with children and want to meet new friends in simular situations the purpose of both groups is for women to circulate meet new friends join in a variety of activities and participate with others in getting to know the community they now live in mrs gram said newcomers annual registration night will take place monday evening sept 14th at 8
