b2 economist suntribune august 26 1987 jacksons victory a family affair sunny skies bless third annual markham stoutfville golf tourney 9 there wasnt just people on the sleepy hollow course during fri days third annual markham stouffville hospital golf tournament but these canada geese seemed to have a you go your way and well go ours attitude all photos by bill lanning waynes 73 does the trick al sproull shows that a little body english is just as impor tant on the green as the putt itself by frank king mother nature was kind on friday and the result was a completed markham stouffville hospital golf tournament last year a torrential down pour turned much of the course at stouffvilles sleepy hollow country club into a lake mid way through the competition this time organizers the markham economist and sun stouffville tribune and the mar- kham stouffville canadian tires were blessed with most ly cool sunny conditions apparently that was just what lifelong stouffville resident wayne jackson needed to card a two overpar 73 and claim the overall championship the jackson family must be quite good at the game because waynes brother glen shot a 35 in nine holes to win the aborted 1986 tournament this year he shot 80 wayne credits his brother for much of his golfing skills noting i used to hit the ball cross- handed but glen turned me around i was probably 16 years old then jackson 37 finished two shots ahead of 43yearold john labus whos been in all three hospital tournaments bob cooper was third with a 76 markhams matt short takes time to show us just who his favorite golfing partner is and why not this little guy keeps quiet about matts final score dale stringer finished fourth with the same score and gord bcddome completed the top five with a 77 as far as his tourneywinning performance goes jackson noted ive been playing fairly well this year so i thought a 75 or 80 would be good but i putted well and i know this course well in fact jackson who golfs at least onceaweek revealed that he once worked in the pro shop 20 years ago so this win meant something a little extra to me its his third tournament championship having won the first stouffville chamberof commerce annual competition and the 1977 stouffville legion event in this tourney he managed to collect three birdies but double- bogied sleepy hollows second hole then bogied the fifth and sixth holes he credits his great finish not only to his putting but to sticking with his style you have to play your own game you cant try to outdrive your partners as for secondplace labus he had two birdies but i missed three birdie putts from inside two feet amongst the other notables stouffville residentminnesota north star keith acton carded an 80 thats a little low for me markhams resident toronto maple leaf steve thomas finished with a 95 thats quite a few over what he normally shoots peter hiscott was the low net winner with a 66 bill amrstrong placed second with the same re sult while glen jackson was third with a 68 the same scores were re corded by fourth and fifthplace finishers ross grey and peter bahcn closest to the pin honors went to gord beddome sixth hole wally barrett eighth tim french 13th and ted puccini 17th h stouffvilles helen schell proves that she too is a mas ter at body english to coax the ball into the hole more money for our hospital coffers by frank king not only was the third annual markham stouffville hospital tournament a success for the golfers but also for our hospit al coffers unlike last year where a lastminute cancellation kept the event from being a sell out the 87 competition was the golf equivalent of standing- room only the maximum number of golfers usually put on a regula tionsized course for a shotgun start is 144 two foursomes per hole but an overwhelming de mand for tickets forced orga nizers the economist sun tribune and markham stouffville canadian tire stores to up that number to 148 that meant shifting some numbers around and putting extra threesomes on sleepy hollows parfives however another 30 of the 100 tickets could have easily been sold the only problem was we oversold it confirmed stouff ville canadian tire owner grant larmcr some people assumed that tickets were still available but our intent is to keep this personal so wc shouid limit it to 144 the participants didnt seem to mind the slight overflow af ter starting at ii am they poured into the clubhouse ab out 5 pm and had dinner at 6 a slide show of the days golf photographed by sjoerd wittc- veen followed with appropri ate commentary by unionvil- les resident funny man glenn crosby trophies and prizes were handed out afterwards the combination of more gol fers and more 300 hole spon sors could result in this years donation to the hospital topping the 16000 raised in 198g on the other hand this years draw prize for a 400 trio of persimmon woods donated by lloyds bank raised less than half of ihe 1100 picked up last year but that too is partially ba lanced by fewer trophy ex- tournamcnt winner wayne jackson second from right holds onto the markham stouffville hospital golf tournament trophy with him arc tourney committee members from left frank ilickcy grant larmcr and bruce annan penses since the 86 low net award wasnt given out due to the awful weather this years sunny conditions were certainly on the minds of tournament committee mem bers bruce annan and frank hickey the weather was perfect and the tourney was very well organized said hickey a one time toronto argonaut who now owns the markham cana dian tire store when the weatherman is nice and the cause is good then the people of markham and stouffville will turn out he continued annan publisher of the eco nomist suntribune was delighted that we could have such a beautiful day on a fine course and that so many peo ple could have a great time raising money for such a worthwhile cause the previous two tourna ments have raised about 30000 for our 75million hos pital being built on the ninth line just north of hwy 7 according to crosby a tournament committee mem ber and hospital trustee the buildings foundations have now been started by two climb ing cranes on the site sewer and water connections arc also complete and the hos pital is scheduled far comple tion in late 1989
