the title as she completed the three- round 54hole tourney with a six over total of 224 her nearest opponent jane moffat of toronto was six shots back the win came only two weeks after streit took the ontario seniors championship at the toronto golf club runnerup in that event was also jane moffat who was two strokes back streits margin of victory at york downs could have been even higher if she had not double- bogeyed the parthree 17th hole she went into thursdays final round with a six stroke lead and that was how she ended the tourney she carded twooverpar scores of 74 in the first two rounds before shooting a 76 in the final round the hot humid weather thurs day took a toll on many of the gol fers and slowed play consider ably which streit said hurt her concentration on occasions it was pretty hot out there to day she said after the tourney but the weather didnt bother me it flowed play down though and that was sometimes frustrat ing you had a long wait on a num ber of holes the lights out literally on the claremontmarkham juniors in mens fastball action last wednesday night playing in claremont stouff ville came out on top 20 in what was for most of the night a pitch ing duel between the juniors jason canavan and betzs john annis in the top of the seventh with stouffville at bat the lights at the claremont park automatically shut off and the field was thrown into darkness the lights were on a preset timer that turned them off at 11 pm a more than 15 minute wait was required before the lights could be turned back on and both sides agreed to call it a night giving betz the win there was little chance of claremontmarkham scoring in the final frame as annis was in top form throwing hard and on target the win puts stouffville alone in second place in the oshawa city and district league with a record of 1541 it was a close contest until the top of the sixth when canavan walked in a run to give betz a 20 lead only a couple of stellar de fensive plays at back issues of the tribune now this was not scientific research on my part it was a way to kill time on a summer afternoon so forgive me if i miss a major happening of that period i was simply skimming over the sports pages looking for stories related to fastball i have no intention of writing the complete sports history of stouffville what really caught my attention while looking through the old stories was that i came across so many familiar names ive only been doing the sports beat in this area eight months but even in that short time ive noticed that a lot of the same names keep popping up i guess that happens in a small town nohitters anyway without further ado lets take a little trip down the stouffville sports memory lane and see what we can find thursday may 24 1968 was the day that stouffvilles bob par- rish who lived on clarke street tossed a nohitter for the altona mens fastball team against the markham juniors the game was played at the claremont park judging from a recent experience in clarcmont i think they still have the same lights they did 19 years ago altona won the match 10 and parrish faced 23 batters over seven innings striking out nine and walking two this must have been a sidelines by alan shackleton sports editor heck of a game as both markham coaches jim johnson and morris proccnko were thrown out by the umpires managers of the altona team that season were cliff dunkeld and ralph oblenes pitchers were hot in the summer of 68 as glenn jackson threw a nohitter of his own for the stouffville iga baseball team against cambray the stouffville lefty was never in trouble and handled the opposition with ease said the june 27 tribune report on the game stouffville won the contest 160 i dont know when mens baseball died in stouffville but the 68 season is one im sure longtime residents remember the iga squad won the league championship in a dramatic sevengame final series against sunderland which was decided on a bottom of the tenth home run by stouffvilles dave slack apparently the huge crowd at stouffville memorial park went insane as the blast cleared the left field fence charging the field during slacks home run trot jubiliant team members were car ried on shoulders for an impromptu main street parade read the report in the sept 26 tribune other members of the iga squad whos names stood out were bill lehman larry spang ted suzuki murray holden and roger todd perfect game also in the summer of 68 brougham fastball hurler ken may threw a perfect game against markham on july 24 may struck out 14 of the 21 batters he faced the 30 victory was the second nohitter the whirlwind right hander had thrown that season by 1970 stouffville had a mens fastball team of their own and some of their top players were bruce fockler bob parish eric jones roger brain gord ness gord tarr pete sanderson barry andrews and bryan emery who is the manager of the 1987 stouff ville fastball squad ironically the brougham victoria square thursday also in 1970 as im sure many hockey fans remember the stouff ville clippers juvenilles won an ontario championship some 1300 fans packed the old arena for the final game ray steel who coached the 198687 midgets to an omha crown was the juveniles manager no to new bats there were a few other things i noticed during my quickie history lesson in 1970 the population of stouffville including whitchurch was 9872 and markham had 31454 residents now stouffvilles population is about 14500 while markhams has soared to over 106000 during august of the same year concerns about a postal strike were being expressed in the paper some things never change in october 1968 stouffville district secondary school gym teacher jim rehill announced the school was packing in its football program because it was too expensive i dont think theyve played proper pigskins at sdss since and finally a sad story about aluminum ball bats appeared in august 1970 is nothing sacred read
