was a member of the ontario 16- andunder girls field hockey team that made it to the finals of the canadian championships last weekend in vancouver hachey 16 plays right half on the ontario squad which lost the championship to a very tough british columbia team 30 in the final sunday afternoon the twoday tourney pitted the provincial field hockey teams of ontario bc manitoba and alberta against each other in competition at the university of british columbia ubc campus it was no sightseeing trip for members of the ontario team as they left for vancouver friday had a weekend full of field hockey and then returned home midnight sunday they arrived back in toronto at 7 am monday we sure werent there for long a tired hachey said in an interview from her home monday afternoon we played at ubc and we stayed at ubc we didnt see much of the town the ontario team got the cham pionships of to a bad start early saturday morning when they lost 70 to bc it was really sad hachey said of the game they were a strong team and we just couldnt get anything going however they rebounded saturday afternoon and knocked off manitoba 40 on sunday morning they took on alberta in what was the most entertaining match of the weekend the game went back and forth before ontario scored in the last 10 minutes to win 10 that was a good game really emotional and exciting hachey said the win also put ontario into the finals where they had another crack at bc and a chance to avenge the loss the day before we were really up for bc in the finals we wanted to show them that we werent as bad a team as we looked on saturday hachey said the bc squad managed only one goal in the first half in what was a close contest despite the whirlwind nature of it all haichey enjoyed the trip and said she had a lot of fun members of the team had been working for months towards the canadian championships and now there isnt much left for them to do this season a lot of the players on the team will be too old for under16 next year so that was the last time a lot of them will play together hachey explained sports breeds social misfits so al whats on your tiny troubled mind this week you ask well maybe you dont ask but im going to tell tell you anyway theres a bunch of stuff on my mind for instance the irancontra hearings are stressing me out something fierce as is the building industry the baseball allstar game and the perception among some that sports is not the most important aspect of life in the latter half of the twentieth century i have to live with these things folks and its not always easy golly ollie oliver north has been making lots of buddies among average americans for his good work funding the contras in nicaragua dont they care about their laws and the constitution do two wrongs really make a right is this why it took the us 12 years to get out of viet nam speaking of 12 years is the allstar game over yet wake me up when something happens that game had to be one of the most painful pieces of television ive ever watched vin scully and joe garagiola going on and on about the ball not being as lively because it had the signature of baseball commisioner peter ueberroth on it once was amusing guys twice was too much and three times called for the death penalty a punishment id like to inflict on the ctv clowns who brutalized the coverage they kept coming back from commercials too late and missing pitches or even outs they showed 11 million promos for night heat and the ctv national news and if i had a rocket launcher do i seem to be in a bad mood this week must be because im not controversial enough for stouffville sidelines by alan shackleton sports editor well that might just change as don adams would say check this out social misfits just as high school basketball teaches you how to be a poor loser the manly attitude towards sports seems to be little more than a recipe for creating bad marriages social misfits moral degener ates sadists latent rapists and just plain louts i regard high school sports as a drug far worse than marijuana and it is the reason that the average tennis champion say is a pathetic oaf paul thcroux holy jumpin wilbur thems fightin words paul thcroux is a fairly well known and respected writer with many books and essays to his credit including the mosquito coast the above quote came from an essay called being a man which he wrote in 1983 obviously sports werent high on his list of fun things to do however i think his criticisms are excessive the benefits of playing sports especially team sports in terms of health socialization and enjoyment far outweigh any disadvan tages thcroux is an american and he must have gone to one tough high school sports teach people about working together for a common goal cooperation and the fact that sometimes no matter how hard you try you dont always win thats what growing up is all about i think the problem comes when people start putting sports ahead of everything else in their lives unfortunately that does sometimes happen and the results are indeed pathetic one often hears of the husband who cant get away from his family fast enough to spend his time on the golf course or watching football sad as it is thats the individuals problem not sports in general if this guy wasnt out golfing hed spend the time away from his family in a bar with other women or someplace else to simply blame sports is far too easy just because a tavern is built in a town it doesnt mean the population will turn into alcoho lics try explaining that one to few folks in this burg though and youll get an argument apologies to end this little session of rant and rave id like to apologize for what appeared on page bloof last weeks tribune i have no idea of how or why it got there it was an insult to intelligent life forms and had no place in this newspaper im sure it must have really steamed those of you living in new subdivisions who arc still waiting for your sod and numerous re pairs that have to be made to your brand new house because of sloppy building id like to add that when i look upon a piece of land full of rocks and boulders and trees and scrub sic i like it and i wish it would bloody well stay that way
