betz approached me and told me was bringing back mens fastball to town and would i like to manage the team em ery remembered i thought it over and decided maybe it was time to put an end to the playing career and this was the perfect team to do it with emery has a twoyear plan for the stouffville team that he hopes will soon make them a se rious contender for the provin cial championship the idea was to keep the team as local as possible build ing it around a nucleus of talented stouffville players he said the squad has been rounded out with players who emery or assistant coach wayne allan knew from their playing days this is a building year for betz they are playing in a lot of tournaments getting as much experience as they can and next season theyll take a run at the provincials s emery has not regretted his move to the coaching ranks and said he is enjoying himself we have a really great bunch of guys on this team and they make it a lot fun he is also pleased by the tremendous support stouffville fans have given the team the fans are whats made the whole thing work wayne allan whitby resident wayne allan is betz pools assistant coach and he and bryan emery team up to make a formidable coaching staff allan 40 spent the last four seasons as a coach with whitby before that he played fastball for 6 years in the town growing up in whitby he mostly played hardball base ball as the town has a long tradition in the sport before switching to fastball allan and emery both played fastball together on the whitby legionaires thats how they got to know each other when emery took the mana gers position with betz allan was the first man he wanted as his assistant coach allan was happy to take the job ive known bryan for years and this team sounded like a great opportunity he said he was able to bring some of the better players he knew from whitby and oshawa with him to help solidify the betz squad i really enjoy coaching its a lot of fun allan said theres a lot of satisfaction in working with a team and seeing them come together over the years he has been to stouffville many times and liked the town but his associa tion with betz pools has given him great respect for the local ball fans theyre just great theyre al people he said the fans who come out to the park are just terrific it gives us a real lift to see them out there in the stands the excellent team spirit and camaraderie among the betz players has also been a big part of the teams success so far this season he said allan is chief custodian with the durham board of education and lives in whitby with his wife gaye betz lost a heart breaker in their first game of the tourney saturday morning to an allstar team of players from peterbor ough oshawa and the york mer chants 21 them 60 the stouffville boys had to win game three against saveon of richmond hill to advance to the next round however the best they could do was 11 tie overall manager bryan em ery was not though still rank high on the teams list of priori ties tournament play is the best way to expose them to pressure situations the better we can handle that the better team we will become emery sdss students have won positions on ontario girls field hockey teams brenda hachey 16 and lisa zeck 18 will play on the 16-and- under and 18andunder ontario girls teams respectively this summer both girls began their field hockey careers at sdss and it was the support of coach cathy croucher that encouraged them to try out for the provincial squads try outs for the ontario teams began in january at york uni versity and it took a lot of hard work and dedication for the stouffville girls to earn spots rep resenting their province mrs croucher was the one who told us about the try outs and she thought we had a good chance of making it hachey remem bered for the 16andunder team some 60 girls from across the pro vince tried out for positions she added there was even more com petition something like 100 girls battling for spots on the 18-and- under squad practices were grueling four hour affairs which put a heavy emphasis on physical fitness in this respect it was to hacheys and zecks advantage that they were both top athletes in a number of sports at sdss zeck was named cowinner of the schools female athlete of the year for 1987 and hachey qual ified for the provincial finals in distance running this year the four hour practices were tough hachey said we did a lot of fitness drills arid running be cause you have to be in shape to play at that level at first practices were held once a month but lately theyve holding them every saturday in preparation for tournaments and the upcoming canadian cham pionships hacheys team will travel to vancouver on friday for this weekends 16andunder canadian championships hachey who plays the right half position on the team is really looking forward to the trip but she said it was hard to make a prediction on how the team would fare as they dont know a lot about their opponents once there theyll battle six other provincial squads for the national title last weekend zecks team travelled to a tournament in mon treal canadas international reputa- a s raiders win solina tournament 1 stouffvilles a s raiders won the solina slopitch tourna- i ment and a first prize of 500 last weekend over a tough field of 1 16 teams the raiders sponsored by a s construction took on host solina in the championship game and it was an exciting affair in which the raiders triumphed 107 the road to the finals was a little rocky though as the raiders had to battle not only their opponents but saturdays heat and they dropped their first game 116 to hamton restaurant however the raiders quickly bounced back to beat the scar- borough flyers 64 then the next morning they destroyed safe- i way renovations of oshawa 160 to advance out of their division i and into the winners round in the semifinal they faced the tyrone tankers and beat them i 72 to earn a berth in the final i the raiders pete st clair was a stand out over the weekend 1 and he was named the tournaments most valuable player a raider spokesman said it was a complete team effort vic tory and every player is to be congratulated the raiders were the only stouffville area team competing in the tournament next weekend the raiders take part in a tournament in agin- court scarborough this tourney is ov slopitch sanctioned and counts as a provincial qualifier tion in field hockey is growing and our national ladies team is one of the better ones in the world the sport is also becoming more popular at the high school level and hachey and zeck are hoping it can become a sport of the future for sdss good coaching at the high school and provincial team level is what eventually leads to strong national teams which can com pete for international honors at events including the olympics field hockey teams have 11 players a side like soccer but the positions they take on the field are different there is a lot of running involved and only three substitu tions a game are allowed hachey said there were some pretty big differences between the sport at the high school level and the provincial team its a completely different approach between the two she explained on a high school team its important to have fun and there are varying degrees of skill but with the provincial team they take things a lot more seriously she pointed out that with the better players a lot of time was spent on strategy and set plays whereas in high school the basics of the game are stressed hot june for lawn bowlers stouffville lawn bowling club members had a busy month of june winning trophies and tournaments across york and durham region the ladies team of eleanor crossen edna mashinter and opal lehman won the rich mond hill annual tournament also the squad of dawes hare eleanor crossen and edna mashinter won similar honors in the uxbridge tourney elymer farthing marg l wagg marg e wagg were the high three winners soccer panthers wilt in ottawa tourney for the first time this season the stouffville panthers bantam boys soccer team failed to reach the finals in a tournament last weekend the boys travelled to ottawa for the gloucester international tourna ment they were full of optimism and expecting to make at least the semifinals however due to a number of factors including the hot weather and injuries the panthers failed to advance out of the first round in the four other tourneys theyve been in this season they reached the finals winning two of them they got the gloucester off to a bad start saturday morning and never really recovered from their first game 21 loss to south ottawa though the game began at 8 am the conditions were ex tremely hot and humid and this took a toll on the fathers who started sluggishly stouffville quickly fell behind by two goals in the first half panther coach alfons rubbens called both of the ottawa scores defensive giveaways captain charlie melko scored a beautiful goal to bring the panth ers close in the second half but despite intense pressure they couldnt ge the equalizer we had a lot of opportunities in the second half to tic it but we just couldnt got the ball in the net rubbens explained with their backs against the wall and playing in the swelter ing noon day heat the panthers came up with a gutsy perform ance to knock off montreals jeantallon 20 travis white scored both stouffville goals and according to rubbens they were both classics good enough to be framed on the first goal white took the ball through the entire montreal defence before pulling the goalie and scoring and as if that wasnt enough white managed to top that feat when he curved a freekick from twenty yards out around the mon treal wall and into the top right corner of the net for goal number two they were just magnificent goals rubbens said the second was an absolute classic the win meant the panthers still had a chance of advancing to the semifinals if they could beat their final opponent of the day kleinjuventus from texas the match was extremely close as the texas boys proved to be an outstanding team and it en ded in a 11 draw ben cheung scored the lone stouffville goal in second half the tie wasnt good enough to put the panthers into the next round though and the tourna ment was over for them considering the intense heat the surprisingly stiff competition and the fact that the panthers were missing five starters due to injury rubbens was proud of their play we only had one substitute for three games in that heat he said you just cant win in that situation it was a good tourna ment though wellrun and a lot of fun slidin home safely an unidentified stouffville credit
