weekender july 4 1987 p37 religion page preserve the gift god gave us my back yard three years ago was a cornfield now that the buil ders have completed their work and the yards are sodded our gar den begins to take shape we are fortunate to be located on an old line fence of one of the earlier settlers fields we have the shade of large basswood trees to enjoy in our own yard stands just one tree a wild hawthorn this is a weed tree that grew along the fence line perhaps when the ori ginal snake fences still divided the farms to us the old hawthorn is a valued tree and the starting point for garden planning it provides fragrant white blos som clusters in early spring and small birds are attracted to the protection of its branches and particularly enjoy the bright red haws that last on into the winter thank goodness the developers spared these trees conservation of nature is a well- known theme among canadians but we usually talk a better line than we practice it takes time thought planning and money to conserve for the fu ture the beauty of trees and the open land spaces that grow our food and give us parks and re creational areas but this effort and expense is well worthwhile and a real part of our christian morality as people of the book we are called to be stewards of the good earth god gave to us this is not easy to do in an age of high technology and the success of progress in the form of excit ing new buildings and high tax- yielding residential areas but if we are not careful in our conservation efforts we will fail in our calling to be stewards of all the gifts we are given to use in this life every good farmer knew that you had to treat the soil with re gard for its future productive health it was the ambition of our early settlers to leave the land forourera that means careful means residential lots large enough for gardens and mixed housing units placed on municipal lands that our new generation of young marrieds can afford it is a lot easier to be a good steward in your own backyard and property most of us already are that what is harder to do is to take our stewardship responsibilities as citizens in a fast growing com munity seriously that takes involvement as rate payers committee work for affordable housing and net- working to make sure that trees will be planted and agricultural land conserved even though we may not live in a garden of eden we still can share with others the good earth god has given to us that is a pri vilege all canadians should cherish zz j i kite markham pentecostal church affiliated with the
