pi2 weekender joeyrarev the markharii fire departments tugofwar team combine muscles for a winning effort over the york regional police participation plus by kathleen griffin the second annual economist and sun canada day picnic could never have been the success it was without the support and coop eration of the entire community the economists advertising manager pat pappas said it best it could only happen in a town like markham there wasnt one group we approached who turned us down everybody worked together and it really turned out well markham transit contributed the free shuttle service from markville shopping centre and saved last years traffic headaches the optimist club ran the concession stand and made a record 13500 that money will be channeled back into the community in their various youth programs president of the optimist club marc bossy said the day was a marvellous success next year i promise we wont run out of burgers the optimists would also like to thank local merchants who donated food or provided discounts on materials the 1st milliken mills pathfinders also set up a booth selling girl guide cookies stickers and prizes for the kids the proceeds from facepainting and the childrens games went to the markhamstouffville hospital fund the people manning those booths donated their time and patience what was nice said mrs pappas is there were no commer cial outlets whatever money people spent all goes back into the community the town donated the spectacular fireworks display and the kiwanis club provided the experts needed to set them off special thanks to mothers pizza who helped keep our enter tainers happy and to the milne park staff for a job well done jerry morose samples the mustard for the hot dogs at the optimist clubs concession these hot dogs were only two of 700 people enjoy the day near the st john ambulance mobile unit it and the markham optimist club member george crompton keeps busy selling ice cream to a hungry fire department were both on standby all day another community donation to the crowd the club earned 3500 breaking its previous fundraising record celebration captains of the tugofwar teams shake hands after economist and sun publisher bruce annan presented the trophy firefighter jim miles accepts congratulations from york regional police captain ron veyt mm r j v if vj 1 ii bhfte 31 3v y iii v7 ffi 4 fji f i l 1 mm 1 a markham firefighters proudly line up for this pose they are the reigning tugofwar champs winning two years in a row y n
