im weekender june 27 1987 m9rmmwwfaaa weekender canada day has meaning canada day is a time for us to celebrate our nationhood across this country canadians of all ethnic origins join together to mark that day 120 years ago when the dominion of canada came into being at that time canada had four provinces and a small population but people sensed that there was great potential in the rugged land that was to stretch from the atlan tic to the pacific today canada is vibrant land diverse in its makeup as the new foundlander is different from the city slicker from toronto yet we all have this pride in being cana dian unlike our large and noisy neighbor to the south canadas history is one of orderly develop ment and peaceful reform that may not be dramatic but it has created a stable country that is the envy of most people in the world in both markham and stouffvil le canada day is being cele brated in style join the fun and join your neighbors sir john a macdonald would be proud don bernard a day with the jays is blue as the early morning sun filled my room with the promise of un told summer pleasures i awoke without the slightest premonition that this day would end up giving vent to a plethora of frustrations it all started with the blue jays now i suppose there are many things that are much more impor tant than the jays drive to regain the american league east pen nant this season but this particu lar june day found me at a loss to think of even one so off we drove to the worlds worst ballpark torontos ex asperation stadium a quick stop to grab a coffee at the burger joint at woodbine avenue and stouffville road and i realized id been burned agan literally how can anybody of reasonable intelligence continue to serve take out coffee in a paper cup theyve been doing it for years at this place youre forced to eitherdown the steaming hot java in anxious gulps scalding your in nards or nurse it the full 5 mi nutes at the expense of melted fingertips from where i live jjiucs ctablzu on down the 404 to the parkway er parking lot that is that freeway is a bad joke strictly for people who enjoy taking the sce nic route with absolutely no con cern for getting somewhere on time something happens to drivers when they get on that winding minihighway they succumb to involuntary prefrontal lobotomy changing lanes angrily without signalling they tailgate they drive way too fast or way too slow exchanging trudeau sa lutes like phone numbers at a singles bar a ball game at 1230 pm on a wednesday afternoon conjures up visions of an intimate afternoon in the sun with a manageable crowd which is why i always try to take advantageof such an opportunity obviously 46000 other people had the same idea as the 2nd largest crowd in blue jay history watched detroits lou whitaker lift the first pitch of the game over the right field fence for a home run and things didnt get much bet ter despite a heroic last minute charge which saw the blue jays come within a base hit of pulling this one out of the fire but hey they invariably lose when i attend so why break with tradi tion the loss combined with the crawl back up the parkway at rush hour in the steaming heat found me a little less than gener ous when the conversation came to topics like the ridiculous loca tion of the new domed stadium which will make the traffic prob lem worse still and the postal workers strike just two more frustrations on a day which had by now become tarnished by them it was remarked as we sat amid a sea of automobiles that i should write a scathing indictment of the posties in this space something about them having a pretty lofty opinion of their talents despite the fact that they are all so easily replaceable we noted that i hadnt had a let ter to the editor in several months and that this would surely trigger a few wrong i lamented the let ters would never find their way to the newspaper office it has hard enough getting mail before the strike i got home just in time to head out to the sand lot to coach my little 8 year of darlins the bad news bears of minor ball we lost again despite a smashing first inning that saw my girls be come a wrecking crew hitting for the five run limit and taking no prisoners as always the game was high lighted by about 279walks now ive been pushing the league ex ecutive to do something about walks in the lower levels for years now but to no avail but on this particular evening my spleen had to be vented so vent it i did after the game in a chit chat with a few of the parents they now know exactly where i stand on the subject so having got all the venom out of my system i promise to be pleasant perhaps even exem plary next week for im sure that on balance as the man known for using the don valley parkway salute would say that the universe is unfolding as it should economists sun thetyibune weekender bruce annan publisher 9 heritage rd markham l3p1m3 2942200 4959440 6402100 6492292 don bernard jim thomas
