weekender june 13 1987 p23 nrrririirr lifestyle of nanny has rewards nanny janet evans comforts her charge 16monthoid matthew by maxine share janet evans keeps an immaculate house but not hers the 21yearold wales native is a nanny she cooks and cleans and cares for two children while their parents go off to work and at this point in her life theres nothing shed rather be doing i dont think i could stand being cooped up in an office all day as a nanny youre your own boss and you do basically what you want in the day sixteenmonthold matthew climbs up on her lap walky round the garden like a teddy bear one step two step he shrieks with delight and slides down janets legs to fetch a toy its really a great lifestyleshesays for the right person you have to love children basically that lifestyle revolves around caring for matthew and six-year- old douglas five days a week her responsibilities include their laundry and meals as well as light housekeeping is that enough of a challenge for a collegeeducated nanny im not the type of person that lets herself get bored she says if im feeling that way i find something to do in the afternoon one way she fills her afternoons is visiting other nannies in the area we get together for lunch when we can she says the children we care for are about the same ages and its good for them to play with other children and although i stay home im free in the nights its quite different from being a stayathome mom she says her job has many perks this is a good profession if you like to travel she says and save money she considers her modest wages of about 130 a week excel lent i have no bills to pay at all my food is paid my accommoda tion is paid its almost twice as much as i could earn doing the same thing at home that was something she considered when she decided to put her name in with an agency that specializes in collegetrained nannies- they interview you then someone in canada interviews families over here and they try to find the best match when the agency believes it has found a suitable one you get a phone call and you ha ve 48 hours to decide if you wish to take the job or not when she got that call three years ago she readily accepted and janet seems to be making the most of her opportunity enjoying both the ups and downs of her career her first family lived in don mills and she got very attached to their little girl she came home from the hospital at three days old and she was mine until she was two i wanted to leave before we both got too attached i cried all week when i finally left shes been working for her new family since september 1986 she says she feels like part of the family i really dont think about the job aspect of this because i live here you dont stop working because your 830630 hours are over it is a very give and take situation if you give they give employers can give by allowing their nannies the use of a car or giving time off fordoctor or dental appointment she said although janet enjoys canada and hopes to become a landed immigrant soon she often misses her mother and sister in wales her mother she said was supportive of my decision to come here both financially and emotionally but i knew inside she didnt want to see me go i told her i was under no obligation to stay for more than the length of my contract one year she was upset when i told her i wanted to stay here though we write letters and my momll phone me to keep in touch ive had to learn to control it though she laughs my first phone bills were attrocious one was up to 210 dollars and that was the end of it janet is busy establishing a new life for herself in canada a country she says she loves there is always something to do she says while she hopes to be with her present employers for some time yet janet has dreams of opening a daycare centre in unionville she and a fellow nanny are scrimping and saving to provide a service here people i ve spoken to say there isnt the type of centre they want for their child if her past initiative is any indication janet evans will have a daycare centre one day and it will be hers matthew janet and sixyearold douglas enjoy some sun and sand r ksmmommi m t i bedtime is story time for these two youngsters in the care of nannx jjnjexejans- photographs bymaxineshare
