kathleen griffin markhams new teen club opened friday night with more of a fizzle than a bang but its bound to get better with what had to be a dis appointing turn out of about 50 kids the party never quite got off the ground in fact there seemed to be more teenagers in the park ing lot and outside the conveni ence store than inside the club however for an opener it was not a total loss the lighting sys tem at the club is spectacular and the dance floor is a fair size with a video screen in the corner the music was less than great but when it was good madonna wham and duran duran were popular the floor was packed although no one was checking purses or pockets at the door there was no evidence of boozing or drugs although many teens held the obligitory cigarette located in the sherwood plaza on hwy 7 there were a few re minders of the previous club stu dio 134 draft taps and beer advcr- tisments still decorate the bar area as well as waitress only stand up bar signs tables were set up in fours and sixes with the sherwood res taurant menus in sight prices range from 5 for appetizers to almost 20 for dinner certainly unaffordable for most of the pat rons admission is 5 and pop goes for 150 at the bar was a secret con coction that bubbled and steamed and was discovered to be non alcoholic fruit punch for 99 cents a glass by far the best deal in the house it was a night of discovery for both the management and the teenagers the club certainly has a better idea of what the kids ex pect in terms of music at least and the teenagers now know what they can doand what they cant the idea is a sound one and the club should fill the very empty space of teen entertainment in markham it may mean less pro fit for mcdonalds but the kids want and need a place of their own they need somewhere they can dance and scream and shout all on their own turf in this new teen club it looks like they might find it with songs and skits some favo rite cities and streets enjoy
