students gain career experience by chris garbutt in uxbridge secondary schools food program the kitchen is the classroom but it isnt your average kitchen its the school cafeteria students prepare lunch daily for hundreds of stu dents and staff at their own school as well as for joseph gould senior public school across the road the program began in 1985 when bjorg winterstein joined the staff and she said it has been very popular ever since the sales are up response has been extremely positive she claimed there is no fast food here everything is made from scratch although the quality of the menu has improved mrs win terstein said the prices have not increased if anything theyve gone down we just meet cost so we dont have any overhead the instructor explained there are three classes grades 9 11 and 12 partici pants are marked on perform ance in the kitchen and take- home assignments first of all they have to be here mrs winterstein said they are assigned a job and i observe how they do the job how they finish and clean up af ter themselves the students also take inventory we have to balance the books students prepare the main course salads dessert soup and sandwiches and must also be responsible for keeping the kitchen clean they are put on a rotation of duties mrs winter stein said to get a taste of ev erything friend in meade c2 community calendar c3 dream horse c22 fun classmate rob kerfoot agreed the course is useful adding that he feels its not diffi cult yeah its easy and i think its better than how they used to make the food he said claimed student kim rus- nell its working with people and food i like people and i en joy food and we get breakfast every friday morning added craig nicholl the program has been used as a catering service as well the foxes den is a dining room set aside for special dinners in a formal atmosphere mrs winterstein said these dinners are usually during the lunch hour but the students have been doing some commun ity service outside school time after taking the course this year three students have already decided to enrol in post- secondary education in food preparation i think its going extremely well the students are
