aurora by alan shackleton sports editor it was so close the stouffville district secon dary school sdss spartans senior boys softball team just missed making it to the york region championships when they dropped their semifinal game to aurora high school 41 monday afternoon at home as with their loss last week to bradford for the league title the spartans were killed by their si lent bats the aurora pitcher was throwing smoke and it was the fifth inning before stouffville got their first hit a bloop single by first baseman dan larmer the hit also produced the only spartan run of the game as it cashed in derek mann who had walked earlier in the inning the walk had spoiled what until then had been a perfect game for the aurora pitcher we got beaten by our bat ting said coach rod leonard we just couldnt get the hits when we needed them defensively the spartans were playing well behind the pitching of scott couperthwaite dave chilvers made a great grab in centre field in the first inning and the game was tied 00 going into the fourth an in ning that proved to be disaster- ous for stouffville they made a number of men tal errors that added up to two aurora runs high school games are only six innings long and the closest the spartans got was in the bot tom of the fifth when they made it 21 aurora added two more runs in the top of the final frame with dave chilvers on the mound for stouffville and the game was over the spartans went down in order in the bottom of the sixth unable to capitalize on the ejec tion of the aurora pitcher who was thrown out for arguing with the umpire in the top half of the inning the spartans finished the sea son in second spot in the york region loop and the highlight of their season was probably their strong play in the bradford tournament two weeks ago in which they reached the final be fore losing to huron heights overall i thought we played very well this season leonard said we cant complain about how we did betz home
