artist she spends her time writing poetry short stories and painting if im not writing i paint i enjoy the painting she said in an interview and the stouffville senior citizens pastimehas just paid off she recently received a letter saying that she had taken the grand prize in the world of poet rys annual contest i wasnt going to enter at first but i thought well i might as well throw in a couple the 78-year- old mrs wood explained last year she earned a second prize in the competition but only received a certificate this year she didnt take it too seriously to tell the truth id forgotten i entered the contest she said i guess its a good thing i did enter but last week mrs wood got word that her poem the garden of prayer had won her the golden poet award and a cheque for 1000 shell travel to las vegas in au gust for the third annual poetry convention to collect her prize mrs wood said there is a his tory of writing in her family and she began writing while she was teaching school near georgian bay it was a 30mile drive to school and when i got an idea i pulled over to the side of the road to write it down she explained then after school i would ex pand on the idea her poetry has appeared in newspapers in midland picker ing and toronto she is also pub lishing a book of poetry for an art exhibition to be held at the silver a golden pen stouffvilles hazel wood has turned a love for writing into a successful pastime as she recently claimed top prize in an international poetry contest chris garbutt jubilee club in september mrs wood added that she has a novel on the way i have seven chapters done now i hope ill get it finished within three or four months she came to stouffville three years ago and is now living in an apartment on winlane drive she joined the silver jubilee club and last year began taking part in an art class there since taking up art mrs wood has painted about 30 pictures i gave most of them to my family they were so excited i was getting into art the senior said she said when she used to teach shed tell her students to paint but never had the opportunity to do it herself when i started painting i soon found out when you put a brush down on canvas its something entirely different from what you see or what you think you see several pieces of her artwork will be displayed at the silver jubilee clubs september exhibi tion last christmas she combined her writing and painting talents to make her own christmas cards just for fun mrs wood said one of the keys to successful writing is experi ence you need experience and reading i read four or five books a week in response to mrs woods suc cess in the poetry contest her friends have encouraged her writing they want me to write pierre berton and get an agent she said mrs wood
