kirk parchment 11 during york regions elementary school relay meet wednesday at union- ville high school the pair were members of the firstplace senior boys squad at milliken mills pub lic school milliken was the overall meet winner sjoerd witteveen by frank king sports editor passing a baton is apparently pretty easy stuff for elementary schools in milliken and markham three of them milliken mills highgate and et crowle en ded up dominating wednesdays york region elementary school relay meet at unionville high school highgate captured the junior division crown grades 46 while milliken won the intermediate ti tle grades 6 and 7 for the fourth straight year markhams et crowle was third in both groups and finished second behind milliken for the overall championship we know were strong because we have a large number of in termediate students said peter jameson who coached milliken with debbie smith and bev haz- lett that gives us a lead over some otherschools he continued we figured the intermediate girls would win and they did but the others were a surprise the victorious intermediate girls are jennifer wang heather messias anneliesa mclean and lena andrew also gaining top spot were the junior boys wayne brown pe ter koulis fabby dugal and kevin wilson rounding out the firsts were kirk reid bryan craig chi lam and kirk parch ment on the senior boys team millikens intermediate boys squad also finished first but was disqualified and knocked back to sixth place fourthplace finishes went to the junior and senior girls we put them through a good training session of about five weeks said coach jameson we wanted them to be more skil led in the batonpassing and it really paid off highgate with almost 800 stu dents might have given milliken a run for the overall title but the school only goes to grade six still firsts went to the atom girls dianna dakin margaret papageorge nina arvanitidis shelini alimchandini and atom boys ian morgan peter ho pe ter delic darren hylton the junior girls placed second urania arvanitidis rea ganesh elaine tham sophie bedward and junior boys fourth sheldon reis neil kowlissan kirk harri son james papageorge ravi sukhraj i thought wed do well though we certainly didnt expect to win the title said farooq shabbar who handled the coaching with susan lane but the kids worked very hard for the past month or so he noted most of the skills were de veloped last year and perfected this year as for overall bridesmaid et crowle just to qualify for the final and make the top six is excel lent according to greg wilson who coached the team with har vey parks six of our 10 teams made the finals and the only other school to compare with that was milliken he added so were really pleased with our kids j a nicole deane j accomplished diver dancer unionville diver wins unionvilles nicole deane has only been diving for about seven months but shes already starting pulling in honors deane competed at the level two 11andyounger division in the recent dolphin diving club meet easily winning the one- meter board competition the nineyearbid goodmills court resident who trains 45 hours each week with the scar borough diving club finished third in a tight threemetre board section f deane is also an accom plished dancer with margos school of dance she won the eightandyounger category at the recent york region finals then despite hurting herself in a playground accident short ly before she went out and placed second at a canadas wonderland competition betz beats markham- claremont by alan shackleton pitcher john anniss 14 strikeouts led betz pools stouffville to a 50 win over the visiting claremont- markham juniors in fastball action wednesday night annis faced the minium number of 21 batters in the seven inning contest hurling a twohit shut out in a blus tery and cold memorial park after three league games this season stouffville hasnt had a run scored against it john threw a very strong game and was completely in control said stouffville manager bryan emery im pleased with the way our defence and pitching has been playing offensively betz took advantage of a couple bloop singles and some confusion in the juniors defence it was markhamclaremonts first league game of the year the juniors sponsored by the claremont legion ended the match with four errors stouffville opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when terry bowles stroked a twoout single in which he only just beat the throw to first bruce beare then brought bowles home with a short v fly to centre fieldtuiat thpwin4hqldupthe out fielder had to come in a long way for the ball and was unable to hold on after a spectacular attempt at a diving catch beare ended up at second with a runbattedin rbi and stouffville had a 10 lead betz increased their lead to 20 the next inning on an almost identical play when chris toole hit a twoout blooper to right field which the claremont fielder just missed the hit scored paul sinclair from first bryan emery admitted that the wind may have held the balls up a bit making the out fielders job a difficult one even without a wind those texas leaguers are tough plays to make juniors manager bob abbot agreed there was a bit of a wind and i think it may have had an affect on those two short high ones its a difficult catch to make and with two out stouff ville was running all the way by the time the ball finally came down the guy who hit it was on second stouffville added three more runs in the fifth while annis shut the juniors down in the sixth frame seventh as second baseman steve may lead off with a clean single for the juniors second hit their first hit came on a single to right field in the fifth inning by mike hobson scott harpers attempt at a sacrifice bunt ended in disaster for the juniors though as it popped up to betz third baseman bowles he turned the catch into a double play by picking off may who was trapped between first and second annis tossed a strikeout to end the game despite the loss abbot saw a lot of positives in tht juniors first game and he is confident they will improve with time were pleased with our performance for a first game he said we made a lot of errors but that will improve with time the juniors roster isnt complete yet as abbot is still waiting for some players to return from university
