p4 ekendermay 23 weekender 407 needs complete commitment ontario treasurer robert nix ons budget offers soothing relief to our cantankerous commuters with a commitment to start build ing hwy 407 within six months but if this start is not followed with simultaneous starts along the proposed corridor the inter change will be a rolaid and our ulcerous congestion will fester markham and stouffville resi dents are more than ready to take the total cure twentyfive years is an unacceptable forecast for the highway to be in place we want and need the highway within five years and this timet able is not out of reach despite temporary leases on corridor property which would have to be bought out this dynamic area with its in credible growth goes a long way towards filling the provincial cof fers many corporate giants are headquartered here reasonable access to and from this commercial area is essential to keeping it in place lets hear what follows the in terchange tickler will there be other construction starts along the route which will build towards the interchange when will these start is now too soon jo ann stevenson spring season not a pretty plight the pattern of bungling inepti tude associated with pink panth er inspector clouseau would appear to have become the trademark of my efforts to take full advantage of this years glo rious spring season it all started with my trek through the vivian forest in march while summer had ar rived early everywhere else the bush turned out to be a mess of mud snow and ice making pas sage by running shoe a most pre carious endeavor this was followed by a picnic outing at bruces mill where mr outdoors ended up lugging the portable gas barbecue and all the other picnic paraphanalia from the parks locked front gate to the grassy knoll a ways up the road how was i to know they shut the place tight at 6 pm on week- nights in april and my guest who is still at an age where proximity to a bath room becomes a determining fac tor in any outing was very unfor giving when it was discovered that access to that facility was cut off with the closing of the park gate next okay whats spring without the crack of the bat the sound of horsehidc on leather peanuts and hotdogs etc etc at an evening out in the gorgeous night air i watched the blue jays pound it out of those same kansas city royals who broke our hearts back in the fall of 1985 things started out well enough until we emerged from exaspera tion stadium at games end and it became apparent that i had lost my knowledge of the cars where abouts sure its a great night for walk ing all around the exhibition grounds my tired amigo allowed but its past my bedtime and i really should be getting home undaunted i continued on in search of sublime springtime sensations watching the eques trian jumping competition at the richmond hill spring festival it came to me trail riding on horseback we phoned canadiana stables in markham and asked them to sad dle up a couple of lively ones are you game for two hours the rest of the group asked us upon arrival go for it i replied in my best cowboy drawl the stirrups were adjusted and we climbed up into the saddle whats this young fellas name i asked the stable boy comet he replied i thought i detected the suppression of a slight giggle in his voice must be the heat i concluded comet promptly proceeded to head off in the opposite direction from the rest of the group the horse was intent upon feeding on the long grass over bythe parking lot i pulled sharply on the reins gave him a kick with my heels and said ga or something equally inane comet simply pulled his head up turned his neck around to eyeball and bared his teeth as if to say look you may have delu sions of grandeur about galloping into the hills like john wayne singing your silly willie nelson songs and all that but this is just another working day for me ill get you there but it will be at my pace and we aint gonna break any records okay who was i to argue now horseback riding is liter ally a pain in the you-know- where the effect of the constant up and down motion of seat to sad dle makes for incredible discom fort especially for those like us who didnt know how to distribute our weight properly i was somewhat comforted by the girl in the group who had raced horses in alberta telling me that even seasoned riders suf fer in his way you eventually develop cal louses on yours posterior she said kinky i replied trying to act nonchalant i never did manage to break comets independent spirit and as we hobbled back to the car my dear friend mumbled something about another fine mess id gotten us into i think ill stick to board games conomistsuii the tribune weekender bruce annan publisher 9 heritage rd
