weekender max 16 1987 p47 williams planning to have fun by frank king sports editor if you didnt hear him saying it one wouldnt think it was five- time world champion john wil liams talking about this years motorcycle hulclimbing season for the past few years wil liams has been talking up big ab out his chances of capturing a 750- cc world title to go along with his 500cc championships the only problem is his results werent equalling the talk wil liams 48 hasnt won a world title since moving up to the larger- sized motorcycles and he gained only one top10 finish last season the 14thavenue resident has taken steps to change that but for a change he isnt about to make any bold predictions im just gonna go out there and have fun he said im not going to fret about winning the world championship if i tally up enough points to finish in the top 10 then fine williams played up this dark- horse image so far as to back away from saying whether he could earn the title this year i think im capable of winning a few hiuclimbs but im not about to put any extra mountains in front of me translate that to mean hes working hard to take the pressure off himself and to that end it includes some restructuring of the wil liams team with sons greg the defending twotime world 500cc champion and wade the 86 750- cc us national champ to start hes decided to reduce wade williams won 86 us national title mechanic nick kemps heavy workload by switching to thor- nhills leitner bush engineer ing for motorcycle maintenance nicks so busy with so many projects that i felt he should con centrate on greg and wades bikes frank leitner and gord bush want to try some new ideas with my engine which theyve already rebuilt to take some weight off the motorcycle of course the last time wil liams tried a new idea it was the experimental and disasterous benelli motorcycle however he pointed out that these are new ideas to me but not to frank and gord the changes dont end there were running a team effort greg williams defending world champion again but weve decided it would be easier if each fellow looked af ter his own bike it was a bit of a strain before because each guy was worrying about the others williams hastens to add that come race day the trio is once again thick as thieves when it comes to getting the machines prepared and all three are under the same sponsorship again with john williams missing seasonopening race stp topping the list others are hawaiian tropic products champion spark plugs bel ray oil diamond chain aeroquip don valley north toyota and markhams service tire taking the pressure off is prob ably a good idea because jofe wont be at this years season- opener in elkhart indiana greg 23 and wade 27 are there now but a lastminute en gine problem sidelined johns motorcycle meanwhile the elder williams figures the entire team will have its hands full with this seasons competition its gonna be rough for every body in both classes it could t any one of four or five guys who could win the 500 division and any one of 14 or 15 riders could take the 750 williams would like both divi sions to have a canadian cham pionship but that hasnt hap pened since he folded the canuck race at wilberforce several years back in a dispute with the land owner but john and greg have been on the lookout for a new site check ing out eight locales since janu ary whats needed is a 300foot elevation with plenty of space forv spectators and parking we havent found one we liked said john but greg and i have formed a partnership and were gonna try to put on a race unionville archers 2nd a secondplace overall finish for the unionville high school uhs girls team led the way for local athletes at wednesdays york region archery finals lori cook gillian casson and irene tarn finished a distant second behind richmond hills langstaff the acknowledged loc al leader in archery and host of the competition casson was the topplacing un ionville girl jason bloye was the best on one of two boys squads while derek burnett topped the other team dave fournier was the schools best unlimited shooter all the archers improved their individual scores said coach pat white who noted the competi tion was quite stiff some of them her students were quite nervous because it was their first tournament and its quite different from shooting in your own gym meanwhile markham district high schools shaun mccarthy collected 378 out of 600 possible points in the compound high- pressure bow division team mate steve shipley earned 402 in the laminated freestyle category the guys we have this year are fairly new explained dick northcott who coached the pair with bill mccarthy i suspect theyll do better next year northcott said the tough opposi tion forced markham to field a small team because we didnt want to send guys and get them creamed he would like to improve the sport in this area noting its good for discipline our guys were out 730 am two days a week training you have to practise practise prac tise archers need that level of de dication but so far the problem has been a lack of visibility as well as near- by facilities its a fledgling sport north cott pointed out there are ontario and national cham pionships but what id like to see is a shooting area in the mar- khamunionvillestouffville area are you thinking of upgrading your
