understand ing wereof the jewish tradition his life was dedicated to convinc ing the ordinary person that con cern for others was the ultimate reality of life and the only real protection in a hostile world jesus took his wisdom from the old testament and the world he saw around him yet his message was so powerful that those in poli tical and religious authority could not tolerate him his message went beyond the hard and fast rules of the pharisees and the sadducees thus he was ex ecuted however jesus message per sisted and became a foundation for much of our modern society the new testament documented what jesus was communicating and today many people look to that document as an important source of wisdom now when we are considering the reinstatement of capital punishment we should consider jesus advice he was telling peo ple that the only real protection was to develop a society where people were concerned about each other if we are concerned about protecting the cictim of vio lent crimes we must adopt jesus message and work for a con cerned and peaceloving society capital punishment declares that vengeance and the use of power are acceptable means of resolving problems capital punishment declares that the power of the state is the ultimate reality and that concern for others is secondary capital punishment speaks loudly and clearly that state violence and killing are acceptable capital punishment creates a climate of terror and fear capital punishment singles out a few unfortunate individuals usually the poor and defenseless to use as scapegoats in communi cating the power of the state if we support capital punishment we find it easier to accept the macabre truth of the war eco nomy we perpetuate we find it acceptable for the united states to spend 25 per cent of its gross national product on the military we find it acceptable that presen- ty the world is witnessing 40 wars we can live with the fact the daily death count in these 40 wards is at least 1000 soldiers and 5000 civi lians john saul globe and mail april 3 1987 we accept the fact that by allowing the arms trade we profit from violence without capital punishment a country must search for ways to develop a peaceful and harmonious society surely this is the best protection against violence i i urge you to please write sinc lair stevens mp parliament buildings ottawa kia a06
