spotlight on educa lets abolish ltlent labels ls by lynda williams rid of some of the labels we use to describe stu- sc thers pick up on them and use them in various ways for sample namecalling lost mainstream classes are named after the subject ghtscience music or grade 2 why is it that special ducation is labelled by the type of student in the class fairiable retarded gifted and learning disabled are i some xamples ijsthe regular stream of students go from grade to grade or icjassto class known by their grade special education stu- dejits are labelled by their difference possibly we should just calf thehfalternate class a b c ind so on or better still justrooihl 2 3 etc after all as prig as the placement of the student is correct the school taff and parents are aware who else need know the particu lars tjmahy will undoubtedly say that the rest of the student body already knows of soon finds out what each class is about however theyre not provided with a handy readymade jickandstick label one size fits all at the beginning of the year usually the first newsletter hat arrives home lias a list of teachers names aridthe fades they teach there for all to see arelthe labelled lasses even children who have perfect or almost man- ijielrs at home of in adult company resof t to using whatever ttiey need in any situation involving just students a ready- lade name is sometimes a handy weapon there will also be namecalling but anything we can do to if event it should be tried we can tell our children not to do it fnot to be offended by it ignore it we say but children ant just shf ug it off it may not seem to be a big thing to us but from the ttidents perspective it can be very disturbing lets stop labelling its hard enough being a kid in a large chool without the personal attachment we were probably scd to as students everyone knew each other and knew that e parents also were acquainted if your mother and dad scovered you hadnt been treating your schoolmates well it heard about it at home now most parents dont know ch other due to the size of the school that small bit of rotcction is gone kswsii owabout it lets call them grades 1 to 13 rooms a
