weekender april 11 1987 p5 editors mail taxpayer concerned about centres cost reader objects to towns priorities dear sir after the disappointing decision by council to turn down a much needed 50 metre pool for budget reasons i have watched with amazement as several of our councillors namely moran bon ner and cox have tried feebly to justify their decision to build a 25 metre pool it angered me to read in the april 4 weekender that the coun cil has decided to go ahead and spend an additional 1 million on an indoorsoccer facility this year rather than next the town not only found the money they told our group wasnt there but also used our argument that it is wise economicaly to construct now to save on higher costs in the future where were our above men tioned councillors and mayor bell when the citizens for a 50 metre pool argued that if mar- kham were to build a 25 metre pool now instead of a 50 metre one we would within three or four years need another 25 metre facility what a joke when council assured our citizens group that we would be proud of the new mil- liken mills facility it will have four ball diamonds six soccer pitches at least four tennis courts a basketball court yet only half a pool statistics show that there is as much if not more interest in aquatics as in skating for exam ple yet we currently have seven arenas and only two pools dont misunderstand me im as much in favour of all types of sports facilities as the next per son but lam furious at the towns ignorance and lack of interest in aquatics ifthe truth be told last year our recreation department turned down 1000 registrations for swimming id like to know how many kids were turned away from ball or hockey or soccer by comparison im one taxpayer who is disillu sioned with some of our elected officials and on the basis of our petition for a 50 metre pool im sure therell be at least 8000 more like me ps while on the topic of pru dent capital spending i might add i am waiting for the announce ment of the first public meeting to discuss the 23 million dollars the town plans to spend on the civic centre joan sharp unionville editors note see page 12 for a debate on this issue congratulations to you for the attractive scalemodel of the proposed new municipal building and civic centre on display in your lobby as this project and its atten dant projected massive capital budget is now receiving wide publicity and is the cause of much conjecture as different members of council have re cently been on record in the media dispensing a potpourri of information and varying opinions about it and as a quite concerned taxpayer i would like to make the follow ing suggestions 1 that you place beside the scalemodel a placard showing the total projected capital cost and the proposed sources of re venue for this singularly os tentatious edifice 2 that you hold a number of public meetings similar to those recently held for the offi cial plan review and the tran sit survey to receive public input and to have open discus sions taxpayers of the town need to be better informed of the facts and true figures after all your own financial expert has predicted that our taxes in the coming years will increase because of the additional costs of maintaining this centre and other new projects taxpayers must be taken more into your confidence and discussions now not just in an election year not after a fait accompli 1 trust my suggestions will merit your serious considera tion everard hoo markham we love letters if you have a beef or want to pat someone on the back sit down
