merchants association revealed this week that it is seriously con sidering a plan to open the main st mall for sunday shopping the merchants association would first have to obtain an ex emption to the sunday closing law by securing touristarea status and that says mall merchant john walters shouldnt be hard to do if unionvilles main st can be declared a tourist area why cant markhams main st asked the manager of the second sun tan spa calling himself a postbomb merchant a reference to the explosion that rocked the mall last august mr walters said its difficult for markham village lanes to compete with the union- ville shops that open on sundays the foot traffic here in spring and summer is large he said thats a lot of potential busi ness if the merchants asso ciation decides to move ahead with its plan to get touristarea designation it would then seek re gional council approval but association president frank briggs owner of peaches and jeans says the merchants still havent decided what plan of action to take i feel that sunday openings will be good for both the retailer and the consumer he said although he did admit that there is some opposition to sunday open ings mr briggs said that the govern ment is trying to legislate moral ity by forbidding sunday open ings merchants should be given the choice to remain open on sunday he said a lot of people only have one day to shop why not give them sunday as well he argued marg ramsdale of buy the yard said sunday shopping would add to the vitality of main st she admitted that although the mall would gain touristarea sta tus most of the sunday shoppers would be local residents i would be thrilled if we could open she said but fellow merchant greta markus owner of greta fine lingerie is vehemently opposed to sunday openings everyones so obsessed with making a buck said the store owner i think people are being exploited with sunday openings it bugs me just to talk about it people are getting so commer cialized she said why does ev erybody have to shop all the time the mall merchant said she hopes markham village lanes is refused touristarea designation take a break she said cant people stay out of the store for one day board approves new brother andre school by paula crowell community editor a permanent home is in sight for students attending brother andre catholic high school in markham markham school trustee ter ry ryan said the contract was approved at a budget meeting wednesday night division con struction of vaughan was awarded the contract for 11597000 the contract must still be approved at a regular board meeting april 21 and the minis try of education has the final say if the ministry gives the green light its expected the building will be completed in time for the 198889 school year the brick school will be built in front of where the relocatable school now stands on 16th ave east of hwy 48 the relocatable will be moved once the building is completed included in the construction contract are a triple gym 15 regular classrooms specialty rooms for art science family studies vocal and instrumental music typing and office prac tice computer studies and theatre arts there will also be seminar rooms for smaller groups of stu dents a cafeteria a library facilities for the trainable re tarded and special education rooms the space included in this contract will accommodate 1254 parks and recreation director brian wrigglesworth was directed by standing committee thursday to review the hours of operation of area facilities and re commend potential change that could mean libraries opened on sundays or longer fit ness centre hours according to the committee mr wrigglesworth will do the review with a view to expanding hours where warranted and re port back to council
