erring companies the aim is to make firms aware of the bylaw which compels cer tain businesses to create no- smoking areas in addition the town will force these firms to post signs designating such areas firms such as banks hospitals reception areas and retail stores are required to post nosmoking signs however it seems that many places have simply ignored the bylaw an estimated 634 businesses in 52 shopping centres are covered by the bylaw as with most forms of government regulation the town bylaw creates problems in enforcement in this case it is worth the effort second hand cigarette smokehas proven to be injurious to those in haling it it is one thing for people to dam age their own bodies with cigarette smoke its quite another for them to injure those around them don bernard r effects of the febru ary sun combine that with the gruelling pace they had been maintaining since 6 am that morning and an already ex hausted energy supply was quick ly depleting they had entered that eerie state of mind-over- matter where the obsession with getting there first or perhaps just finishing was drivingthem well past their normal endurance levels a 28 mile teamsnowshoe race through hills and valleys is guaranteed to build character as well as stamina especially when its participants are 12 to 15 year old boys who like most kids to day have never been pushed any where near their physical limits for the boys of st johns school in claremont this is what two months of rigorous training had been leaning towards they would be up against the challenge pre sented them by the clock stiff competition and their own natu ral resistance to extreme discom fort they all finished and this years race provided one of the most dramatic gut wrenching finishes ever the team led by darcy kelly had led most of the day however darren hawkins squad had been challenging all the way one of the teachers would observe at days end that there are no great first teams unless there be a smashing second team to jab the thorns into the rear end of the aspirant with a mile to go hawkins made his move patting their we ary competitors on the backs as they trundled past it looked like his troops had saved this last burst of energy for the right mo ment one hundred yards from paydirt both teams within seconds of each other panting pushing exhorting their mates finding one last ounce of strength from who knows where to sustain this last desperate charge parents surrounded the side lines barely able to control their excitement they called their boys on hearts bursting with pride as they watched the drama unfold any one who had any doubts about whether it was worth the money to send their son to st johns felt those doubts evaporate at this exhilarating time hawkins team was maintain ing a very slim lead it looked like they would eke out the narrowest of victories fifty yards yes they were holding up but then it happened young andrew twitchell is an average lad who had surprised his captain darren hawkins and his teachers with his show of grit and determination on that particular day andrew twitchell who according to one feacher had not been accustomed to giving the last ounce of energy for much of anything this had been andrews day of days his day of absolute glory almost just yards short of the finish line the boy swooned staggered a few seconds and fell temporarily unconscious he was all played out craig chevannes his team mate was quick to react picking him up and carrying him across the line when he recovered he was crying apologizing to his team mates for losing a race they seemed to have won they were crying with him with captain hawkins trying to console him there are different kinds of vic tories the boys of st johns school learned that saturday in february what it feels like to give all youve got and more one boy learned that every effort will not always win but im sure the experience left him with a know ledge that most of us will never come to learn a missionary alexander mac- leran once said our lives are all made up of trifles the great things come three or four times in the 70 years the little things every time the clock
