crosbie to blame the torys low placement in the polls on the liberal news media is an in teresting conclusion one that will draw a few laughs however in all seriousness i feel mr crosbie lias a point it does seem very strange that most newspapers including the conservative toronto sun take great delight in heaping criticism on the government even at a time when our country is enjoying unusual high level of prosperity surely mr mulroney and co cant be doing everything wrong while the media has a right to criticize i do not feel it need go out of its way to continually bash the party in power sytem today students are still using some of the same strategies in vogue many years they have two choices either meet the demands of the teacher or dodge them some strategies are even rewarded as good habits even though the student knows when to use them to hisher advantage a poor speller can resort to being super neat the spelling ability may never improve but at least 1010 marks arc awarded for neatness you have to take the marks where you can get them i must confess to telling my kids being neat is the easiest way to obtain marks and sure enough its worked for the past ten years the handwaver soon learns that many teachers pick students who dont seem to be paying attention frantically waving your hand as if you arc almost bursting with the answer can often result in not being asked if and when the teacher catches on to this strategy and does ask you a question you can always become a mumbler particularly effective in a language class the mumbler when asked to respond to a question simply says soiiiclliil that no one can mistake for anything and is promptly corrected by the teacher a teacher who is very particular about pronunciation and accents is very succeptablc to this strategy mumblers also do well in other classes where the teacher is so in tune with the correct answer anything sounding close is actually heard as the right one small children are experts at the baffled look after a carefully taught lesson with lots of concrete materials the young student that sits at the table staring at the followup work as if it just dropped out of a space ship is often responded to by the teacher coming along and working through most of the questions with for the student this is called helping nice help if you can get it might it not be more appropriate to go back to the beginning with this student and see where heshe got lost along the way spelling difficulties lend themselves to dictation done by messy writers even those students that apply the super neat rule to alu other subject areas realize dictation calls for the opposite strategy if unsure of a letter write an ambiguous one that can be taken for either an a or an o this works on the premise that most teachers will give you the benefit of the doubt i guessandlook is often used well with all but the straightesl pokerfaced teachers by watching the teachers face when you answer you can tell immediately if the answer you are in the process of giving is correct this gives the student the opportunity to change the answer as heshe goes along even failure becomes a last effort strategy for some students some arc successful in making it their strategy for coping there fore falling farther behind as time goes on some students may feel if they adults know you cant do anying then theyre not going to expect you to do anything and wont punish or blame you for not being able to do what they didnt think you could do in the first place at some time or another most students apply one or more strategies to their school work boredom confusion fear and apathy all play a part in the adoption of strategics what happens to the curiosity perseverance and love of learning that very young children have where does it get lost along the way whitchurch stouffville wed june 24th to wed july 1st 1987 we arc looking for people interested in assist ing in the strawberry festival if you would like to
