50metre pool after looking at the final fi gures no matter which way you cut it we cant afford the new municipal centre commented councillor scarpitti if we approve this the municipal com plex the public will get short changed but those who voted against the larger pool and for the municip al complex councillors fred cox bob sherwood tom newall bud bonner ron moran mike popovich and mayor carole bell were generally concerned ab out the largerpools cost adding to the towns projected 6 million de ficit in 1987 and several were unconvinced that the need for a 50metre facil ity had been sufficiently demons trated regional councillor ron moran said the town would realize no real savings with the larger facility he added that the town would pay a proportionate fee for a pool increased pur ple ink into a tributary of the rouge river cip containers ltd pleaded guilty to discharging waste into a waterway and failing to notify the ministry of environment of the spill the company was fined 1500 on each count by justice of the peace george cummings crown prosecutor jerry her- lihy representing the ministry of enviornment told the court that the company pumped water con taining purple ink and paraffin wax onto the back of their proper ty over a threeday period last november the waste water was carried off the property by heavy rains and washed down into a creek leading to staff reporter despite a growth suspension plan to soothe irate mount joy area homeowners markham council tuesday found itself confronted by residents de manding answers the group currently in the process of forming a rate payers association in response to the towns official plan op review demanded action on the proposed mount joy indust rial designation but the town which approved in principal a plan to redesignate the entire site a study area still had to answer to residents ward councillor gord land- on who introduced the new proposal said mount joy will become a study area and re turn to the same status it had prior to the official plan re view the new proposal prohibits development until a markham bypass and 16th ave widening is complete and makes a provi sion for buffer zones should in dustrial development take place it was referred to the official plan review committee and staff for further consideration mark hassan area spokes man for the residents said re sidents insist on appropriate buffers between their homes and potentially industrial de velopments if its just a garden peri meter if thats what it is its totally unacceptable to the 16th ave residents said mr hassan in a separate exchange he requested that the town pre serve a manmade pond on the north side of 16th ave near brother andre catholic school but councillor landon said the development question is too early to consider and said buf fer zones will be addressed later mayor carole bell noted that further meetings on any prop osals will be held in the fall the councillors were ac cused of backpedalling on the issue and told they were naive by another disgruntled resident mr hassan echoed those statements in response to councils prepared motion for a rcdesignation of the area it seems to me this is a prearranged cop out to get us out of here early he said after the bitter exchange the two sides agreed to repre sentation at a monday night meeting at et crowle public school the meeting takes place
