p26 weekender february 28 1987 markham wirisc m ri v tourney by bruce ether1dge the markham district high school girls curling team used a nearperfect game to win last weekends durhamyork secon dary school association curling tournament skip diane mclean 17 was really hot according to coach doug walker after his squad beat canningtons brock secondary school 1510 in game one and whitbys anderson collegiate 95 in the championship mclean made a difficult angle takeout early in the first game when her rink was trailing to turn the contest around diane was so consistant she didnt miss a shot her coach raved twice in the brock game the markham rink was down by five stones walker said the teams front end which consisted of two 15yearolds lead debbie green and second lisa rowsell missed their shots on the first five ends but after that the whole team played exceptionally well the spectacular performance of mclean with the solid support of vice sharon magnon 17 allowed markham to come back and defeat brock by five stones walker had the girls use a draw- round style rather than playing an aggressive hit game after the teams initial problems the girls were able to set up blockers out in front of the ring and then drop stones in behind them markham now advances to the provincial playdowns in sault ste marie in late march the boys team didnt fare as well finishing runnerup to a tough thornhill team it started with a win over uxbridge but fell to thornhill walker said the guys just we rent able to make the shots but added that it had a lot to do with thornhills excellent play the
