p6 weekenderfebruary 14 1987 editors mail local still fighting snow removal plan dear sir as the resident of manhattan drive whose complaint to canada post precipitated the article on snow removal from around su per mailboxes mailbox cleared manager weekender feb 7 i feel you should be made aware of all the facts and not just those provided by the post office on sunday feb 1 after having been out of town for several days i went to retrieve my mail as all of us second class citizens must do from my super mailbox to get to the mailbox i had to climb over a huge snowdrift that had resulted from a snowstorm on the previous friday and had not yet been cleared away on monday night i went again to get my mail and the snowdrift had still not been removed i attempted to contact the mar- kham post office to voice my dis satisfaction with the situation however the phone was constant ly busy being unable to reach the mar- kham post office i contacted don ellis the area manager for all postal stations in east metro and surrounding areas it just happened he had been in formed that pat blainey the man responsible for ensuring that the snow was removed was having it removed later that night he also said i sounded as bad as the letter carriers who complain about inaccessibility due to snow the followng morning tues day before leaving for work i checked to see if the snow had been removed as promised but despite the assurances of the pre vious day the snowbank was still there feeling totally exasperated with canada post i contacted my mp tony roman and informed his office of the situation i also contacted the economist and sun and apprised you of the intoler able conditions relative to my super mailbox and canada posts lack of action i returned to my mailbox on tuesday evening to collect my mail and found that it was still inaccessible it had finally been shovelled out but the snowplough had gone down the street and fil led it back in i returned home and called the markham post office and talked to a mr dsouza who identified himself as the manager he advised me that there was nothing he could do that it was the responsibility of the letter carrier supervisor and that i should call him the next day i advised mr dsouza that this was totally unacceptable as the ice and snow conditions repre sented a safety hazard to all who get their mail from this group of boxes someone could easily slip and injure themselves mr dsouza reiterated that there was nothing he could do be cause the snow removal contrac tor had to have 24hours notice to remove snow being dissatisfied with the re sponse i again called mr ellis to voice my concerns mr ellis was unavailable but a stan houghton who was sitting in for him advised me that it was indeed mr dsouzas responsiblity to arrange for the snow to be re moved he told me he would call mr dsouza and speak with him about this on wednesday five days after the snowfall the snow was cleared and i was able to get my mail is this any indication of the con cern canada post has for its cus tomers the post office boasts about its percentage of nextday delivery what they dont say is that those of us second class citizens who enjoy the luxury of super mail boxes have to wait five days after our mail is delivered to be able to pick it up safely pat procenko markham block industry residents urged dear sir my congratulations to the eco nomist sun for alerting mar kham residents to the towns official plan review on the front page of its jan 28 1987 edition without that article this prop- osal could have slipped through very quietly without anyone knowing about it which was probably the intention having lived in markham now for almost four years it is becom ing very apparent to me that our elected representatives all too frequently allow proposals of this nature to be swept under the carpet in hopes that they will not be noticed this happened with the attempted relocation of the mar kham stouffville hospital and angry protests ensued very quickly once it became public knowledge resulting in a rever sal of the decision when will our elected repre sentatives realize that markham residents are not a bunch of im beciles since the third and final meet ing of phase i of the towns offi cial plan review at the mar kham community centre on feb 4 i have been inundated with phone calls from very con cerned and irate residents in markham village obviously their concerns are concentrated on the mount joy redesignation ie the lands east of hwy 48 west of 9th line north of 16th ave and south of major mackenzie dr to industrial land having read the town of mar kham s official plan review jan 1987 1 see that a 25year offi cial plan was drawn up in 1976 two years later it was mod ified to establish study areas of which mount joy became one to be considered for industrial usage why when contacting the markham planning department to determine what was likely to happen in the vicinity were fu ture residents of markham vil lage simply told it was zoned agricultural and not advised that it was a study area of this na ture one of the objectives accord ing to the official town of mar kham plan review is to select locations for the extension of the urban boundary and minimize negative impacts on rural lands and uses most of the mount joy land and everything north and east of it is prime agricultural land what is logical about heavy or rail orientated industry possibly re quiring outside storage the resulting pollution from the industry itself and the high traffic volume is hardly benefi cial to the surrounding prime agricultural lands i also ques- tion what kinds of chemicals will be transported through the en tire markham area the review acknowledges that it would be very expensive to pro vide the necessary sewage facili ties to all 660 acres of land in volved what is logical about going to all this expense when they envis age it being used by industry that would have difficulty in paying the land prices in the pre stige industrial areas elsewhere in markham it is envisaged this proposed industrial site will accomodate 12000 commuters where is the logic of the incredible cost in volved to overcome the inade quacy of the transportation system i also understand that this is one proposed area in markham that would allow strip joints where is the logic in allowing strip clubs so close to the brother andre high school markham village residents are already joining forces to fight this proposed redesigna tion anyone prepared to get in volved at any level should con tact me at 4714189 after 6 pm or leave a message on the answer ing machine patricia hegemer markham drug story unbalanced reader says dear sir this refers to the weekender issue of jan 31 1987 and to an article entitled prescription piracy a bitter pill catchy title im sure it is policy at your pap er to present commentary and news as fairly as it is possible at least i read your paper hoping thats your policy i think the above article was most unfairly presented and most onesided one view was pre sented that of the pharmaceutic al companies there was no view or comment from anyone who might oppose bill c22 why not the companies promise more r d research and development in canada there are no legisla tive requirements to make cer tain of that the companies promise up to 3000 more jobs again there is no committment just a promise- is there any consideration for the cost to our medicare sys tem its going to bear the brunt of increased profits for the drug companies is the increased cost to the pro vincial drug plan going to put the whole plan at risk what effect is this increased cost going to have on those per sons with little income and no in surance coverage for drugs wel fare nearly all the r d done by drug companies is now done in the us is this another shingle shakes or softwood lumber sellout because the us is pushing us for the legislation i think you should ask the wri ter charlotte cave to do another article presenting a balanced view ja grimes unionville m bibs warehouse sale garment bags totes lady rosedale travel tabletop kitchen and x
