over the position feb 2 succeeding bruce johnston he brings 18 years teaching experience to sdss jim thomas by jim thomas stouffville when doug and sue mccammon moved to stouffville 16 years ago it was never envisioned he would some day be head of guidance at a school only a few steps up the street the unexpected occurred feb 2 when mr mccammon tookover the position at sdss made vacant by the retirement of bruce johnston hes happy with the way ev erythings worked out however mr mccammon didnt submit his application without a lot of throught with one son jeremy in grade 9 and a second son tim in grade 7 he wanted to make sure the move had the bles sing of the family they gave him the green light mr mccammon was born at millgrove ont outside hamilton he obtained his secondary school education at dundas and his degree at mcmaster a young looking 41 doug mccammon brings 18 years experience to stouffville high including four years at lang- staff twelve years at thorn- lea and two years at sutton mr mccammon has his own philosophy with regard to gui dance gone he says are the days when a guidance teacher sits in an office and waits for students to come in i believe in reaching out and making myself available he states i intend to be visible he has two assistants jan sherman fulltime and mary frances juk parttime mr mccammon claims all teachers are in effect gui dance counsellors im very impressed with what i see here he says every teacher is a professional ex tremely sensitive to the needs of the students although he sees the career decisionmaking process as important he firmly believes nothing is irreversible no one is ever stuck he states a decision can always be re versed the average person he says changes careers six or seven times if an original plan doesnt work out theres no need to push the panic button he notes mr mccammon says hes been warmly received by everyone including custo dians administration and staff and the students here are wonderful he adds i hope the community truly appreciates the kind of high school we have in stouffville he concludes graduates return to summitview stouffville students in grade 8 at summitview are ex cited rather than fearful of mak ing the move to high school in the fall this was indicated by positive responses to questions posed by douglas mccammon the high schools head guidance in structor mr mccammon spoke to the grade 8s thursday and outlined the various options available in grade 9 he was accompanied by three summitview graduates lucy elliott and tracey duke grade 13 and jeremy gallop grade 12 im really impressed with the enthusiasm of the sdss staff and students mr mccammon said youre in for a great experi ence academically and every other way late walter jacob a cavalry veteran in world war i for mrs cora conner spring- vale baptist church was her second home because of this association it seemed fitting her funeral service should be held thursday in this atmosphere mrs conner died feb 3 in york central hospital richmond hill where shed been a patient nearly eight weeks mrs conner the former cora wideman was born near rich mond hill daughter of ralph and louisa wideman following her marriage charles and cora farmed on ken- nedy road at rr 1 unionville j and later built a house on the prop- erty after the death of her husband i in 1970 mrs conner moved to testa villa apartments stouff ville mrs conner enjoyed all types of handiwork including sewing quilting and crocheting she made most of her familys clo thing she was an excellent cook her membership in the con- gregation of second markham baptist church and springvale baptist church extended over 60 years she served as a deaconess and with the ladies group rev bob flemming told of his great joy in visiting with mrs conner and spoke of a favorite verse in her bjble entitled on the wings of prayer rev jack bart said mrs con- ners courage and faith through the dark days of the great de pression enabled her to better understand and sympathize with those experiencing similar diffi culties in addition to her own family she gave of her time in the raising of young people from the chil drens aid he described her as a mother to the motherless dr ws whitcombe said his memories of mrs conner go back sixty years she lived the reli gion she received he said rev mark rogers associate pastor at springvale also took part in the service good clothing for free markham during the month of february coats arc being given away at the markham clothing centre 98 church street markham all other prepara tion i compliment you on your knowledge he stated only two admitted to being ner vous about advancing to a higher level of learning lucy tracey and jeremy out lined the many extracurricular activities available at stouffville high including spirit days the walkathon welcome day variety show square dancing interschool christian fellowship and open house they also briefed the students on some of the courses including compu ter studies family studies machine shop music program band and choir art class sports and more mr mccammon spoke in glow ing terms of the coop education program where students are em ployed out in the community this area includes family studies technical and business he urged the taking of french in grade 9 stressing the fact it could open new doors further down the line mr mccammon explained the three levels of academic pro ficiency basic general and advanced grade 8 students he said must state the level of their choice based on ability and what they wish to do down the road in addition to summitview mr mccammon is also addressing the grade 8s at dicksons hill orchard park st marks whitchurchhighlands and bal- lantrae students return to alma mater three former students of summitview school left to right tracey duke jeremy gallop and lucy elliott accompanied douglas mccammon head of guidance at stouffville high when he spoke to the grade 8 class at summitview thursday morning jim thomas main street toll road the 1987 lionssponsored toll day will be held saturday feb 21 stouffvilles main street from westlawn crescent to tenth line north will be trans formed into a toll road from 9 am to 1 pm donations will be divided between the mar- khamstouffville hospital building fund and the vvhitchurchstouffville recreation centre fund givings are
