catholics really believe l5- you are invited to gospel services wednesday 89 pm james robinson public school 90 robinson st markham original christianity these services are quite reve rent we have no literature other than the bible we up hold jesus as the way the truth and the life and believe in the same ministry as jesus estab lished in matthew 10 no collection and all welcome all in the chiming for local bell band by bruce etheridge like the hunchback of notre dame the whitevale chimes are english bell ringers but thats where the similarity ends the whitevale chimes are actually a 10member choir who in a tightly orchestrated sequ ence ring 40 individual bells to produce unique and delightful music group director ruth garden says the choir plays all major sunday functions such as christ mas and easter at various local churches they also travel across the country to perform in concerts last year the choir played at expo 86 in vancouver throughout the year advanced ringers also perform at various events such as weddings fairs and at the annual canadian inter national handbell festival mrs garden founded the group in 1979 after directing another choir for a number of years in a senior citizens home in scarbor ough the group purchased a three- octave set of permanently tuned english handbells for 3000 in 1979 the choir counts among its members two motherdaughter combinations and a husbandwife team ingrid and andrea schoon are one of the mother daughter com binations while accompanying andrea on a concert in calgary two years ago mrs schoon was asked to fill in for another member who drop ped out mrs schoon who also plays the piano said bell ringing takes a different skill than other more conventional instruments you have to listen to other bells and get a specific sound out of them she said mrs schoon says it takes a spe cial flexing of the wrist when striking a bell to elicit a particular sound andrea adds the type of mallet used also determines the different sounds according to mrs schoon the bell must also be listed or lifted up or so the sound goes out to the audience what andrea finds most diffi cult is hitting the right notes at the right time timing elaine litherland whose hus band manages the choir says playing the bells takes concentra tion the whitevale chimes are a selfsupporting group during the yearmembers raise funds through bake sales square dances and flower sales this year they are holding a square dance in march at cedar- grove united church tickets are 5 the choir practices every thur- day night at whitevale united church at 730 pm mrs garden says they are looking for new members gospel is remedy for disease of sin if there is to be physical heal ing a doctor must distinguish between the symptom and the disease before prescribing the remedy the symptoms may alert the patient and doctor to the fact that there is a disease at the root however the doctor must prescribe a remedy to treat the disease how often the church in the matter of spiritual health has failed to make this crucial dis tinction symptoms are seen and treated as the disease how often the gospel is pre sented in such terms the church has been a diligent stu dent of modern psychology who has taught her that psychological equilibrium is our ultimate end and its achievement comes only when felt needs are met the church has taken her agenda from what our society has diagnosed as mans deepest needs- rather than the word of god hence jesus is the divine aspirin for fear loneliness depression etc the church has failed our society by failing to distinguish between symptoms and the root disease dont get me wrong these are real needs but they are symptomatic like physical symptoms they alert us to the fact that there is a disease that lies at the base that disease the divine manual tells us is sin the scriptures teach us first that man is guilty in sin god is a holy judge who will not leave the guilty unpunished man faces death and eternal punishment as his just sent ence for sinful guilt the scrip tures teach us secondly that man is polluted by sin man was created with a rich and multidimensioned life he enjoys a physical emo tional rational moral and so cial life all were to be subject to god and his glory however sin distorted twisted and per verted all those dimensions of life hence mans greatest needs is for forgiveness of sins and a renewal of life if man is guilty he needs to be forgiven if man is polluted he needs to be re newed in his entire life these according to scripture are mans deepest needs because god has said so the gospel of jesus christ is the remedy for the disease of sinful guilt and pollution jesus christ died to take the guilt of sin and rose again to procure forgiveness of sin as for us we must submit to gods diagnosis and receive gods remedy rev michael goheen minister first presbyterian church of stouffville 4777497 come to church bloomington christian gospel church sun
