whatever the descriptive eighteenyearold rob reid of glad park avenue stouffville has a mental outlook built on both hes admired by his friends and respected by his peers teachers are inspired by his strength hes a symbol of what every pa rent hopes to see in a son or daugh tera firmness of purpose in the face of tough odds for it was almost two years ago the spring of 85 that rob reid then only 15 learned he had cancer initially his problem was di agnosed as inflamation of the sinuses later in mt sinai hos pital toronto he was told the terrible truth a malignant tumor near the front of the brain there are only 200 known cases in the world hours of surgery weeks of treatment and months of con valescence has produced a vib rant young man who stands tall in the eyes of classmates at stouff ville high ive grown up quickly he admits he describes himself as eighteen going on thirtyfive two major operations have left rob with no solid forehead this condition has forced him to with draw from all contact sports he still swims and plays golf robs proud of the fact this week he goes for his first haircut in nearly two years radium treatments left him virtually bald to conceal the hair loss for mer principal john nikifork and present principal peter bright allowed him to wear a hat in school a special concession he appreciated did others wonder i asked i welcomed questions rob rob reid replied and i answered the best i could rob is thankful for the way his friends stuck by him flooding his hospital room with cards and let ters many paid personal visits staff teachers too have been very supportive he says not to mention his parents and mem bers of his family all of whom were called on to shoulder a heavy burden of concern selfpity isnt part of robs makeup while he regrets there are limits to what he can do life keeps rolling on and one has to be a part of it throughout the ordeal he tried to think positively he said theres always someone worse off than you he claims he still treasures the friends he made during frequent trips to the bayview cancer treatment centre robs now looking ahead he hopes to participate in the grade 13 christmas assembly on friday and the 1987 variety show next spring hes already applied for acceptance at three universities- ottawa brock and wilfrid laurier regardless of what the future holds rob reid has made an inde lible mark on the staff and stu dents at sdss and this com munity
