econom ist and sun sabiston area residents reject sewer hookup by deb bodine champion residents in the sabiston subdi vision ratepayers association have decided against hooking up to sewers the issue was discus sed at a meeting dec 8 in the council chambers attended by many residents of the area fred cox and regional councillor ron moran the town of markham approached the sabiston resi dents recently regarding the in stallation of sewers in their area a decision had to be made regard ing the sewer connection for the new subdivision under construc tion to the west of the area if the sabiston residents wished to have sewers installed the con nection had to be dug much deep er than is necessary for the new community according to basil gunathunge supervisor of en gineering for the town the result would be a cost of 17000 or 2178 per year per household for 20 years by leaving the sewer connec tion at the standard four metre depth the west half of the sabis ton area could be serviced for 10000 or 1176 per year for 20 years qavf 2500 on all regular rwced fall and holiday childrens wear qale ends december 24 1986 markville shopping centre the 910 plaza 910 markham rd scarborough 300 steeles ave west two blocks west of yonge thornhill square a third alternative was offered on the condition that an applica tion to the ministry of municipal affairs is approved the desig nated green belt area south of rivcrbend road and extending east to mccowan rd js owned by bramalea bramalea has applied to have the designation lifted to allow con struction of a new subdivision if approved this will enable the east half of the sabiston area to re ceive service from that direction by not accepting sewers for the entire area now the residents of the east end have cut themselves off from future sanitary sewer service unless the application by bramlea is accepted it will be possible however for the resi dents in the east end to hook up to the sewer system sometime in the future while the majority of the resi dents of the sabiston area do not want sanitary sewers at this time they do want storms sewers resi dents are not charged for storm sewers provided the area is being urbanized by the town mr gunathunge says it is possi ble that the new subdivision to the west may alleviate some of the residents flooding problems be cause the storm sewers there will intercept some of the runoff be fore it reaches the sabiston area the residents are hoping that he is right since paying to have storm sewers installed im mediately is even more costly than installing sanitary sewers advertising corrections eatons christmas wrapup 86 insert appearing in the markham economist wednesday december 10th 1986 page h4 items k and p 10 and 14 karat gold earrings
