macbeth lacked magic premiere in series 9 the young company of the stratford festival performed macbeth at markham theatre last week jerry etienne and marcia kash played macbeth and lady macbeth respectively robert ragsdale by elizabeth wyatt stratford festival the name conjures up visions of theatrical magic innovative staging stun- ningvisual effects powerful acting but add the words young company on tour and we have something else again its production of macbeth directed by tom kerr and rcs- taged for the tour by robert beard was brought to town last week by the markham theatre in its inaugural subscription series for the young company it was an unfortunate choice macbeth is one of shakespeares greatest and most difficult plays it de mands a maturity and depth of experience that these apprentice actors quite simply do not have at their home base in stratford with productions firmly rooted in the performances of old pros like nicholas pennell or their founder and artistic director john nevil le they have achieved acclaim but here they were on their own no names bare stage bare minimum of props with nothing to distract us visually our attention was focus- sed uncompromisingly on the acting unfortunately it didnt stand up to such close scrutiny the powerful psychological forces that motivate shakespeares great tragic heroes the subtle cadences and beauty of his poetry were lost theatre in review xlz wijatt overall in the mere exercise of delivering the lines but deliver they did mind you and very well some of the actors showed ta lents that should take them one day to stratfords mainstage marcia kash with a voice like a cello was a convincing lady macbeth jerry etienne was a verile and energetic macbeth and maurice godins porter was amusingly and explicitly bawdy donald adams sensitive inter pretation of ross was impressive when he broke the news to mac duff of the murder of his wife and children his compassion was palpable lee mcdougall too gave us a lovely moment as old seyward on learning of the death of his son the grief and feeling he pro jected in one short line then he is dead were in sharp contrast to the studied reaction of kim co- ates macduff in the same situa tion which moved us not at all the staging was admirable strong entrances and exits energetic pacing fine lighting the costumes in browns and beiges and greys were properly sombre and rough and in the witches scenes we caught glimp ses of that old stratford magic great hairy looselywoven blankets were draped or spread or twirled to produce some weird and wonderful effects as the breeding ground of our future nevilles or pennells or hy- lands the young company is to be applauded and encouraged it has some extremely promising actors it has the stamp of assured professionalism if only their effects had been ex pended on a play more suited to their ages and experience romeo and juliet say or a mid summers night dream what a different reception they might have had for novices macbeth belongs in acting workshops
