should it be demolished main street page 5 tremont plan is back on the rails by nancy hoskin most of us have driven by the tremont hotel located at the north end of main street in markham during the last year this building has been the sub ject of some controversy proposals and plans have been debated thoughout council meetings at historical societies and between local business men to decide whether or not the hotel can be restored or should be demolished and rebuilt as it once was the angloamerican hotel was built in the loos but was destroyed by fire in 1872 it was rebuilt in 1873 as the tremont hotel because the structure was erected hastily after the devas tating fire and has undergone major structural changes throughout the last century it has become a fire hazard and is in its present state difficult to rent office space upstairs though one would hardly ever have the opportunity to enter the building it isnt hard to im agine what a beautiful hotel the tremont once was it is easy to notice the store fronts on the lower level which include a clothing store chil- drens shop hair dresser and in terior design studio but have you ever exploredthe rest of the building at present a music studio and landscaping design firm are located upstairs along with four vacant offices the hotels owner vincent kwok of stouffville owns both the hotel property and the adja cent site to the north for over a year proposed plans have been in the works to take both buildings demolish them for both practical and safety reasons and build an re plica of the original hotel the plans are keeping with the streetscape of markham ex plained ted pickering owner of green design located upstairs in the tremont the new tremont would house seven retail spaces on the ground floor and office space upstairs according to mr pick ering main st has reached the limit as far as providing furth er office space there isnt any more rental office space available along main street most store owners are hoping that main street will now flurish east and west rather than going further north said mr pickering problems with the demolition of the building according to some is that the tremont stands as a historical building and shouldnt be torn down while in actual fact what you see now is very different from the original structure erected in 1873 i dont think the historical significance is a valid reason to leave the building up com mented mr pickering a case in point is the full veranda that surrounded the front which for years hasnt been a part of the structure there was also a drivethrough for carriages which years ago was closed in i dont feel as it stands now that it is an authentic historical building mr pickering emphasized that the new structure would in clude original door frames and other salvaged parts working them into the new structure right now the wood structure as it stands is a firetrap and isnt an efficent building to run a business out of many businessmen are sear ching for rental space along main street professionals who would like to move into beauti ful offices said mr pickering offices would be phased in first being built adjacent to the tremont replica there would be eight spaces each an indi vidual suite an atrium would join the two buildings the building would tie in to the architecture used for markham village lanes and eleven joseph expanding downtown changes in the proposed plans take place each week though as soon as approval is received af ter working on the project for over 18 months it will take nine months to get a demolition per mit and another nine months to complete construction for all the juje- in china all the in colombia allthe sro in france tea masters is a friendly place specializing in gourmet coffees
