by sheila zeidenberg an energe tic thornlca theatre arts teacher her goal was to foster an appre ciation of theatre in young people by staging two plays one geared to high school students the other to younger children in oneweek runs twice a year daytime performances for loc al schools are complemented by evening performances and weekend matinees for the general public as producer and director mrs zeidenberg has enlisted the help of parents other teachers and some experienced actors to work with the students in a mutually enriching learning experience their efforts were rewarded last spring with well received pro ductions of beauty and the beast and the importance of being earnest of the two plays seen last week androcles and the lion was the more successful to work dracu la must create an atmosphere of horror and a growing sense of im pending doom but given the familiarity of bram stokers famous story and its treatment over the years by hollywood notably by george hamilton in love at first bite this presents a formidable chal lenge to any company one solu tion is to put ones tongue firmly in ones cheek and play it for laughs this was done a few years ago in a hit new york revival of the 60- year old deanc and balelerston play here the approach was to play it straight and the actors tackled the challenge with praiseworthy conviction liam mcdonald as harker fiance of the vampires latest victim lucy seward and bryan bray as professor van helsing the psychiatrist called in to diagnose her mysterious symp toms both played with obvious sincerity doug tannahill who took on the role of her father three days before opening is to be con gratulated for pulling it off mrs zeidenberg as lucy was a touch crisp in body language and delivery in her opening scenes for one suffering a lan guishing malady but in the second act when lucy is strug gling against her thralldom to dracula she gave us some ge nuinely touching moments michael preuss didnt quite manage to give the count the necessary air of menace and mys tery he sauntered where he should have loomed or postured but he has a wonderful resonant voice and he projected the power ful sexuality the role demands dave repalh as the attendant and lee kerr as the maid were pert and confident and provided some nicelytimed comic relief while perhaps not quite grasping continued page 24
