p44 weekender october 25 1986 the kraus crew wins a thriller by frank king sports editor it was only an exhibition game but not many championships have been as exciting as mar- kham district high schools last- second senior girls basketball victory lisa colleys finalminute heroics allowed the george kraus squad to record a 6059 decision over metro torontos winston churchill collegiate on wednes day afternoon markhams lack of height was very obvious right off the bat as their battle for rebounds usually went in vain but that advantage wasnt enough for churchill to win but it was enough to make the game heartstoppingly close three times mdhs took big 10- point leads and all three times churchill closed the gap indeed a poor third quarter by the kraus crew allowed churchill to temporarily grab the lead for the first time markham knotted the count 4343 by the end then outscored churchill 1716 in the final quarter colley supplied the winning basket with seven seconds left then mdhs continued with their fullcourt defensive press to keep churchill from one last shot at a basket kraus was happy with the win but just as pleased with the spec tators who watched the action it was great to finally have some excitement in the gym and nice that some fans stayed to the end our girls had a lot of difficul ty with their height but they didnt back down colley who showed off some harlem globetrotter moves finished with 24 points lynn taylor contributed 14 before that the squad went up against the best in ontario and came away losers in the final of the annual seneca college invita tional tournament last weekend game one was a 4742 victory over west toronto collegiate with colley hooping 17 points and carrie lanning 12 markham shut down stephanie smith one of the premier players in the province and knocked off etobicokes silverthorne collegi ate 6044 smith who led her team to the 85 ontario high school finals was held to 14 points due to the com bined efforts of lanning who scored 20 points and cheryl taylor colley had 22 points the final was a lowscoring bat tle with last years ontario cham pions chathams john macgre- gor secondary school who re corded a 3327 triumph mdhs was behind by just a point at the half and by only two with a minute to go but macgre- gor managed to prevail helped by a defensive stall that kept the ball from markham lanning and colley were named tournament allstars this is a topteam tournament and it literally gives rankings for teams going to the provincials said kraus so i guess we have to be considered a favorite even with our lack of size the lack of height sure hasnt stopped markham from con tinuing its dominance of the york region loop where it trampled father bressani 6822 and bayview 6632 lanning and collie didnt play the bayview tangle but allison tunnicliff with 14 points and shawna morrow with 13 were more than adequate replace ments despite the big scores kraus insists york is for real in the ta lent category i think the league is fairly strong he stated its just that we have the ability to score quick ly and that makes us better than last years team carrie lanning picked tournament allstar 75 qualification to win the york durham tennis cham pionship recently the 16yearold st robert catholic high school student has swept the york region junior singles championship twice then won it as a senior this year that put him into the york durham dyssa playdowns where he disposed of an anderson collegiate opponent 62 62 then knocked off cory anquetil of st andrews college 63 60 although the level of competi tion was pretty high richard was never seriously threatened in either match said coach dwight dishaw mainella himself pointed out i play a lot of tournaments so i pretty well know all the top play ers and didnt think they were at dyssa but you cant go into a match assuming youre going to win it hed have good reason too since hes ranked among the top five junior players in canada plays year around and reached the semis at last years junior nationals wherever he goes with this ta lent mainella expects it will still be in this country he wouldnt mind being offered a us scho larship but probably wouldnt take it if i make it i want to do so as a canadian in the meantime the schools senior soccer team continued to show its one of the class squads in the region stretching its un beaten record to 802 with a 21 win over aurora but dont expect any kudos from coaches bruno rovere or mark capone this was our worst performance of the sea son capone lamented its bet ter forgotten frank iafano and armando baldassarra supplied the offence an earlier game saw chris mckennas two goals help st roberts blank king city 50 frank galuzzo ed colicchia and tino decina had the other mar kers coach rovere attributes the teams success to plenty of bench strength which he said is a first for the program ive no superstars just guys who work hard and i can substi tute any of the
