tribune october 8 1986 a5 young people held the spotlight at this years markham fair receives two top awards thirteenyearold shawna mcgregor bcthesda shawna won best in show and top student of 1986 sideroad rr 1 gormley has graduated from the here she receives a red ribbon and cheque from fair elementary class at markham fair in a blaze of glory princess kelly little jim thomas wins eighteen and under class tenyearold amy smirnov stouffer street stouff- ville is one ofthe youngest winners in the eighteen and under class at markham fair amy had 5 firsts i seconds 3 thirds 3 fourths 2 fifths and 4 sixths amys mother the former judy taylor of rr 2 mar kham won the same award in 1972 amy is a grade 5 student at summitview public school jim thomas summitview students enter best scarecrow stouffville katie grin- nell and julie evans are close friends although in different rooms at summitview school theyre the same age in the same grade and live on the same street this year the two 12yearolds put their heads together and en tered a scarecrow in the chil drens section of markham fair it was a winner in tough competi tion it took about two days to make it katie said they did most of the work in her familys garage although its a project all their own they did obtain some help the clothes for example were on loan from katies father and from julies grandfather the stuffed animals two raccoons a frog and a mouse belonged to katies brother ken they willingly obliged katie said as long as they promised to give them back julie said one of the committee members phoned mrs morley the secretary atsummitview and gave her the good news we were really happy katie said the completion of the scarecrow was a togetherness project katie said we started with a body and just kept adding things transporting it to the grounds was difficult mrs grinnell took it in the family stationwagon it was pouring rain katie re called we carried it in like on a stretcher julie felt it was definitely better than last years entry when they won sixth how will you spend your prize money julie was asked she said they didnt know and indicated the amount of money wasnt important were just glad we won she replied graduate captures two awards whitchurch thirteen- yearold shawna mcgregor bethesda road rr 1 gormley has graduated from the school childrens division of markham fair in a blaze of glory the former pupil of whitch urchhighlands now enrolled at gw williams aurora won the travelways trophy top stu dent and the sutherland special best in show the presentations were made by donna chilvers and fair pres ident mary cosburn respectively friday afternoon shawna daughter of wm and candy mcgregor has now won the best in show a wa rd f our years in a row and the top student prize twice in succession she submitted fifteen entries and earned 30 in prizes she hopes to continue in the eighteen and under class in 1987 the majority were enjoy able shawna said of her various projects but some were diffi cult preparation began last spring shawna credits whitchurch- highlands staff teacher marie lloyd with providing the neces sary encouragement my thanks goes to mrs lloyd shawna said i think she should be pleased both like ice cream markham they look alike walk alike act alike and both love ice cream these ingredients added up to a father and son championship in markham fairs chip off the old block contest saturday winners were del and jeff mil lar 39 garnish green markham don and jeff entered as look- alikes three years ago and placed second they decided to give it another try wed planned to attend the fair anyway regardless of the contest mr millar said an en graved plaque a red rosette and a box of chocolates made their day complete the millar family has lived in markham sixteen years weve grown up with the town del says he and wife marilyn have another son bill jeff is a grade 8 student at et crowle public school markham hes this years president of the students council the announced winners were enthusiastically applauded by the umbrellaprotected audience that stood in the rain to watch the contest mc was cathy lee primarys best in show there was a class at markham fair for best in janelle is presented with her award by lori thomp- show nursery through grade 4 winner of the prize son queen of markham fair 1986 school presenta- was janelle petrescue of unionville public school tions were held friday jim thomas the foilomngj are
