p20 weekender july 12 1986 weekender childrens page history lessons franklins about 33 years ago my father was taught in this very school where i am being taught frank lin street public school his clas sroom was in the west wing at that point the east wing hadnt been built he was taught by miss stewart most of the boys back then had a brush cut because the teachers were very strict and they would pull hair mr rose was my fathers principal my father paul coulson started at in school 100 years ago the chil dren wrote with slate pencils and a small slate sometimes a pen dipped in ink was used to write on paper or birch bark the water was pumped from a well in the yard all of the grades were in one room that was heated by a wood stove to get to school the chil dren often walked many miles it sounds good but i like school just the way it is hey kids heres a picture to color while enjoying your summer vacation franklin in 1953 and he loved it jamie zinner and sarah coulson dean vincent grade 4 grade 3 poetry square there was a time but franklin memories will al when i was small ways live on i came to this school ivonne imbleau i was four feet tall grade 8 i went through each grade 1 and 2 and 3 i went all the way through now once there was an old school look at me its name was very nice ive grown a lot ive gotten big it also had a big old bell ger and stronger which always rang twice but im not going to be around when it rang it said ding dong here much longer and sang a pretty song next year it is true that i will be matthew priestley gone grade 2 a grads goodbye franklin st the name of a school where i learned to read and write basic french by the rule to question science and multi ply by twos the whys wherefores and the whos it was here that i enjoyed the fun and the laughter that only good friends can bring today and after it was here that we tried to teach the challenges set by our parents and teachers our principals office an area of fear and security in one with secretaries whose kind nesses should always be sung caretakers and janitors did they stay there all night so everything in the morning would be just right franklin st the name of our school today tomorrow another school another name to say franklin st i have grown and you have seen this and many friends i will miss i leave with many memories claudia rossler grade 8 the future franklin st e by the year 2000 franklin st will probably have been recon ditioned the classrooms will probably be fitted with enough terminal interfaces for every stu dent the teachers will probably only be there for class supervision and computer usage protocol there will also be a cafeteria with synthetic food machines students will stay in one class all day and have progressive levels in each subject according to the capabilities of a particular stu dent all subject material for one semester will be contained on a high density microchip to excel you progress through higher levels of a particular subject at your own rate but must achieve at least one level a semester all computers will be fitted with a modem which links up with home computer terminals so you can do homework at your own lei sure to prevent cheating you will have a retina scan teachers will prepare the subject chips and program them the entire school will be solar powered chris hill grade 8 memories by doug johns the 198586 school year has closed now with many happy memories students achieved numerous awards in competitive interschool events including regional band tie for first place brass ensemble first and boys intermediate track and field there were many mo- ments of excitement like the grade 8 graduation and dance and field trips to southwestern ontario farms outdoor education centres ontario place and the ontario sci ence centre as well as being enter tained by visiting singers jim and rosalie we waved goodbye to three veter an teachers as they retired this jun- e miss betty stiby miss tom dickinson and mr bill binsted first in markham and still first these were the words proud ly pronounced by former principal lloyd abernethy as we were pre paring the firstever float from franklin st public school in the markham santa claus parade the old markham public school was the first school in markham both it and its successor franklin street have served the community well for more than 100 years this year we became the first school in markham village to offer french immersion to students en tering grade 1 this will be ex panded by one grade each year as we grow we greatly appreciate the in terest and hard work of both staff and students for a numberof years it has been a holding school for many growth areas in markham but through the dedication of staff the enthusiasm of students and the support of parents franklin street ps has remained a community school to our graduating class and those moving to other schools may you always carry with you the pride in tegrity
