famous artist lived last days in unionville unicottn standard by larry rainey did you ever wonder where un ionville got street names such as kreighoff and emily carr dur ing the mid1960s unionvilles first large scale modern housing development was named varley village in honor of the commun itys most famous resident the group of seven painter fred varley accordingly the artistic theme was used for the naming of sever al street in the new subdivision after wellknown canadian pain ters as a member of the order of canada and the renowned group of seven painters and as the sub ject of a national film board biography mr varley was cer tainly unionvilles most widely known resident even though he only lived in the community for the last decade of his long and illustrious life nevertheless in a television in terview at the time of the naming of the subdivision mr varley was scornful of the honor this was not necessarily modesty but was typical of his unorthodox irreve rent and tempermental perso nality mr varleys accomplishments- as an artist were indeed formid able born at sheffield england on january 2 1881 he received a firstrate art education at the sheffield school of art and at the academie royale des beaux arts in antwerp belgium after an unsuccessful start to his art career in england he came to canada in 1912 where he quickly landed a job as a commer cial illustrator in toronto he was the official canadian war artist in 1918 and a founding member of the group of seven in 191920 mr varley differed from the rest of the group in that he prefer red portraiture to scenery paint ing nevertheless his stormy weather georgian bay became the trademark group of seven painting he broke away from the group in the 20s and for the next 30 years led an itinerant life travelling and teaching in art school in various parts of the country most notably british col umbia before finally settling painter fred varley as he was when he lived in unionville nfb photo down again in the toronto area in the 1950s mr varley was in his mid70s when he resettled in toronto and the nfb documentary and a suc cessful retrospective exhibition brought him new recognition a patron of the arts kathleen mckay and her husband donald took mr varley into their home about 1960 mrs mckay purch ased burndennet the gracious old white frame house with ging erbread gables which stands on the east side of main street just north of the present calathum- pians restaurant mr mckay was a victim of mul tiple sclerosis and confined to a wheelchair he lived exclusively on the main floor of the house and slept in the sunroom located on the south side off the living room the basement was extensively renovated for mr varleys studio and living quarters though mr varley continued to paint during his time in unionvil le his advancing years and fail ing health limited his output he died on sept 8 1969 at the age of 88 peter varleys book on his father frederick h varley con tains many interesting and re vealing reminisciences about the artists life in unionville during the 60s it is available at the un ionville library outstanding craft people at festival over the
