the junior student allstars 1411 and are now undefeated in 11 exhibition allstar games that the teachers were aided by nhler keith acton and hefty exsdss instructor wayne nugent made the difference goalpads for the stouff ville bantam clippers lie hockey squad showed his versatility as a roving forward by pumping three pucks into the terror net with less than a minute to go on the clock his quick markers stunned acton who was playing defence at the time and moved the students to within three goals of a tie however time ran out and acton boldly admo nished later that if the score had been tied at the end of regulation time his teammates the older folks still had energy to burn teacher al piette opened the scoring in the first half before cohorts moran acton on some fine rushes connell panther soccer team the thornhill supporter had cause to worry the under14 stouff ville boys used the wind to their advantage in the first half to take a 20 lead and then proved in the second half that wind or no wind they are a talented hustling unit with national soccer league nsl potential the final damage was 60 and although victorious panther coach alfons rubbens was pleased that his boys kept running at full speed during the final minutes without slowing down to thornhills languid pace he is worried too we completely overpowered thornhill its not the type of thing i like to have because it wont do my boys any good in the long run rub bens explained the league is completely unba lanced i got together with the pa rents after the game and said we have to draw some kind of target above all others in class sportsmanship and victory and one brilliant season always comes to mind whether its the junior c clippers hockey squad of the mid 70s comprised of exontario juvenile champions or 198586 peewee clip pers or sophmore stingers girls softball team who captured every title in sight last season any club before or after it is judged as anti- climactical a special rugby team enter the bianchi brothers tony and alex originally from pickering they moved to ballantrae after their land was expropriated by the federal government for an airport site they enrolled at stouffville high sdss for grades 12 and 13 in 1974 no sooner had they slipped on a rugger shirt and shorts their appearance at the spartan school was deemed a blessing in disguise the brothers introduced a rather foreign sport called rugby to the students and convinced then physed head jim rehill and teacher dave connell to support a most unlikely team comprised of a haphazard group of volleyball and basketball players and the bianchi magic was just beginning their timing was perfect football had all but died at sdss with rising costs and injuries and rehill insisted the school have at least one contact sport the brothers already avid rugby players with the oldest club in canadian history the wanderers assembled a senior intermediate and midget team their first year at sdss and played seven aside hogball as tony called it we all stuck together tony and alex were magnificent young men recalled rehill they brought rugby to a level that this whole region had never experi enced before by the second season the teams were expanded to the traditional 15 aside and the senior squad which tony and alex coached won the york championship and lost a hcartbrcaker to barrio in dou bleovertime in the georgian bay semifinals there were 18 players on our team that year two had lots of experience the other 16 had never seen a rugby ball before remem bered alex while we were short on talent we made up on desire we all stuck together guys like bob boadway barry doner and ron schell were part of that nucleus what i remember most is the incredible sportsmanship and lead ership that tony and alex really forced on everybody said rehill and the sport didnt die when the brothers graduated it only grew bigger said tony inbetween university classes they returned to sdss occasionally to help out the teams but the bianchi boys couldnt be around forever the interest in the sport started to dwindle at sdss when the opposi- ton became too competitive teams from markham high for instance grew into real powerhouses our kids finally said screw rugger- markham had just been to wales said rehill when the tribune contacted tony 28 and alex 29 the other day they were surprised to learn sdss had not fielded a rugby team this season its unfortunate for stouffville because theyre really falling behind in rugby remarked alex who still scrums with the first division wanderers team i remember stouffville was a big hockey town back then you had to drag the guys awoy from what was their real number one sport still the bianchi brothers did the impossible back in 1974 they were sparkplugs fanatics as rehill would call them who took a sport that traditionally occupied a backseat to hockey and baseball and made it work for sdss for some strange reason tony and alex had faith in a bunch of guys who had never seen a rugby ball before quote of the week the first year i remember walking through the halls and thinking this place is like a ghost town tony bianchi cxspss athlete from the mid 70s recalls walking through stouffville secondarys hallway during grade 12 and noticing little school spirit until he started a rugby team s
