guantlet the gauntlet being the sleepy hollow golf and country club all of the traditional ghosts and goblins associated with the scary tale of sleepy hollow will be back to haunt the participants as they stand on each tee theyre reminded of what peril lies ahead as each hole bears a name of a charac ter or place associated with that eerie legend sand traps gaping ponds and rag ged rough will probably take their toll too but for those who enter the second annual tournament the vic tory will be the spoils itll be even better than 1985 said tournament chairman don atanasoff while we had a great day last year the refinements were making will make this years tournament an even more presti gious affair back as cosponsors of the event are the economist and suntribune lots of tourneys by steve nichols this golf season local courses will have an assortment of charity professional and amateur tourna ments for those who would like to compete or just observe among the charity competitions going on is the labatts blue light event at spring lakes golf club in stouffville scheduled for june 16- 18 all proceeds from it will go to the tim horton foundation according to club manager mac frost this event is one of the big gest tourneys in the country next to the canadian open spectators are welcomed and dont be surprised to see wellknown professionals dave barr and dan halldorson battling it out with the rest also at spring lakes is the ontar io parentchild tourney slated for aug 6 this is a closed event however spectators are wel come at the ontario matchplay amateur championship sept 1519 in june sleepy hollow country club will be the site once again of the frank mahovlich kidney foundation tournament whitevale golf club will hold the qualifying rounds for the ontario amateur matchplay event they will also be the site of the scarbor ough and district ladies cham pionship may 9 is the date for york centre mpp don cousens annual tourney at buttonvillc golf and country club parkview golf course for the 11th year will be the home of the scarborough shriners event which is open to the public the riverdalc kiwanis club will hold its annual tourney and spectators are wel come glen cedars golf club will host two charity events this season july 17 the holy ghost fathers assoca- tion will sponsor a tourney to benefit the cancer society mr ds restaurant in scarbor ough will stage a compctitition there with all proceeds going to the burn unit at scarborogh general hospital rounding out the list of some of the major events occuring this sea son is john evelyn golf centres re vival of the greensmongolia open scheduled for may 24 for further information contact the specific course staging each event phone numbers and loca tions are in the golfcourse preview and the canadian tire stores in both markham and stouffville all concerned were delighted with the success of last years endeavor the tournament is slated for fri day august 15 and the entry fee will remain at s100 included is the round of golf a buffet dinner and a quality prize for every participant because the event is an 11 am shotgun start the cutoff point for entries is 144 once again the low gross and low net winners will also receive an eskimo carving trophy as a keepsake of their victory as an added bonus george knud- son has consented to play in the event and conduct a golf clinic fol lowing the round the first three golfers willing to put up an extra 400 will be allowed to play in the foursome with knudson the extra fee is completely tax deductible the committee is now at work rounding up prizes for the tourna ment returning and confirmed as holeinone sponsors are conlin motors and jackson motors while the town of markham and timex have put up 300 each as hole spon sors we still have a long way to go but we know that the business com munities of markham and stouffvil le are excited about the hospital said atanasoff the economist and suns news editor and a pretty fair amateur golfer we dont anticipate any major problems in obtaining the 144 prizes and the 19 hole sponsorships we need last year the tournament raised 14000 in its first year of operation but according to atanasoff there were some onetime expenses like the master trophy and the special ized golf flags were hoping to turn over close to 20000 this year said atana soff by adding a draw for major prizes we can raise the extra money to exceed our goal one of the prizes already commit ted to the draw is a full set of mac- gregor tourney golf clubs plus a pro bag and umbrella other major prizes for this additional fundraiser are now in the process of negotia tion anyone wishing further informa tion can contact either don atana soff or bruce annan at the econom ist and sun
