relti economist sunyfkibtne april 23 i86 latest decorating trends reviewed at this convention by diane johnson welcome to spring last month at the constellation hotel the canadian de corators product association held their annual convention for retailers sup pliers and directors this opportunity was taken to introduce the newest lines and products in decorating for 86 we consultants were invited as guest speakers on color trends decorating displays and workshops the weekend provided an excellent opportunity to preview the latest in col ors and design in paint floor and furni ture coverings window and wall treat ments and accessories spring has always been a season for unveilings and new beginnings we would like to share some of our discover ies with you must be satisfying the decorating field has largely been affected by the working majority peo ple are busier more confident and aware of their needs the importance of decor to the home and working environ ment has become evident in the way we function therefore the decorating must be visual mentally and emotionally satisfying this consumer awareness and confi dence has led to the acceptance of bolder color and patterns the forerunners of color in 86 are still the pastels however the move is away from the greyed pastels and into the cleaner clearer values where white has been added to the palette these pastels are often accompanied by whites in an overall decorating scheme the jewel tones of the orient have in fluenced paint paper and material col or youll be seeing more of black onyx jade green ruby red saphire blue pur ple amathese and turquoise primaries back primaries the colors for active peo ple are becoming more prominent in kitchens laundry rooms and bath rooms yellow red and blue will be seen in their purest hue in paper and material backgrounds as well as in accents and accessories greys taupes and creams still remain popular however here again there is a slight shift in preference from the beige to taupes and grey when beige is used it ranges from a clean light beige to a cream the use of grey with beige is very com plimentary and can give a rich sophisti cated look black or deep charcoal grey offset with white or creams give you drama making a strong statement the bright rich accent colors or the clean subtle pastels change the tone again but can be equally effective the style of furniture the use of color and material for wall and window treat ments set the overall mood for room one approach in style is towards en glish country this could be the unclut tered eclecticlook the blend of old with new or that of the organized clutter of queen ann chairs accompanied by a modern deep multicushioned sofa sur rounded with the owners favorite knick- knacks the secret to this type of de corating is in the groupings use of red and green the use of complementary red and green is a favorite combination for this style the colors can range from gera nium red to lavender rose the greens may be hunter green to mint green there is a lot of room for personal ex pression the country prints are still desirable although now they merge with a contem porary feel as the motif becomes larger with more background negative space and stronger colors window coverings combine treat ments of balloons with lace swag- valance jabot with tailored drapes and ruffled cotton chintz with blinds the rebirth of stenciling for borders entrance ways cushions furniture and floorboards can be used with eclectic approach another movement which has brought an influx of new material is the high tech style it is a blend of simple clean lines functional objects shiny surfaces luxurious materials and finishes of glass and metal marble and granite leather and lacquered linen silk and cottons echo of the orient this style can have the influence of the orient or the echo of 1920s art deco furniture of the art deco period in cludes padded sheered upholstery fluted arms on sofas wood and marble metal and glass streamlined furniture and geometric display stands window coverings are unpretentious and slick with the use of micro mini- blinds venetians window quilts and metallic verticals the importance of lighting is too often neglected this is a definite moodsetter more indirect and recessed lighting is being used casting a gentle glow the high tech gooseneck lamp has a good look and is very functional for the avid reader lighting at the base of plants for ac cent or to put a magical glow on art pieces is a nice added touch flooring material has also come into its own more emphasis has been put on natural material from clean varathaned oak whitewashed wood strips to slate or ceramic tiles the use of manmade vinyls is moving towards the natural look as well of slate marble or stone floor coverings floor coverings are tending towards area rugs which are portable versatile and give warmth to bare floors the orient has again been the trend setter followed by a contemporary influence on individuality in design the main types of area rugs are the aubissons with their dense durable pile the flat woven dhur rie and the machine washable rag rug an important element to any decor are the accessories the finishing touch they can tie a new color scheme together or update your current one allow your accessories to reflect your personality interests or hobbies consider the use of silk flowers lus trous greenery mirrors fans folk art collectables prints and original works of art when decorating your home or office remember the ideal is to create a per sonal functional environment which makes people feel good and says some thing positive about its owners editors note diane johnson and her parter judy von zuben run colour cue consultants they can be contacted for
