tribune march 19 1986 a5 l gripers dear sir are we a country of gripers when ever we have to dig a little deeper into our pockets to pay for an increase in prices or taxes we automatically complain without looking into the reasons for the in crease we have received and en joyed all the goods and services provided for us over the last 20 years but when were asked to help pay the bill we would rather default why should i pay for what i have received on credit for the last two decades or so we may have a right to expect good social services and good health care but we also have a responsibility to pay for it our failure to live up to this responsibility is the main cause of our troubles today pre vious govrnments havent had the courage to take measures to slow down the snow balling defecit on the evening of the budget i was listening to a cbc news re porter interview some families in the ajax area he asked them for their views on the budget one of those being interviewed was earn ing 50000 a year another made 30000 and his wife was working these are some of their re sponses i cannot now get ahead how am i going to to pay my mortgage off my standard of living will take a tumble and so on it was really pathetic and sickening to listen to them i dont suppose any of them thought about cutting down a little on the leisures they enjoy or doing without a few little things they enjoy but dont really need to maintain their standard of living we have all inherited the follies of previous governments and their politicians at last we have a government that has the audacity to say enough is enough we must start paying for our benefits this is a fair enough policy but meets with a lot of opposition from the population if i was in the happy position of earning 50000 a year i dont think i would complain too much about having to contribute a few hundred dollars more to help pay for what we have received critics say it is always the mid dle class that has to bear the greatest part of any increase why not soak the rich and the cor porations of course it is always the middle class that contributes the most because they make up the greatest part of the population and contribute most to the eco nomy the rich are really not that plentiful to be able to make any real dent in lowering the deficit and if the corporations are taxed more heavily their desire to ex pand and create more jobs will be stifled to me this is not politics but just plain common sense there never has been a just tax system and i doubt there ever will be you cant run a country effi ciently by trying to please all the people all the time what really turns me off is the continuous negative criticism by the opposition in parliament cri ticism is good and necessary for any government but what we hear from messrs broadbent and turner is nothing but destructive criticism not only concerning the budget but practically everything else the government brings up in the house nothing constructive comes out of their mouths their tirades against the government are interspersed with expressions such as cruel budget and the rich riding on the backs of the poor one doesnt expect such expletives coming from responsi ble leaders of the opposition at a time when the country is under pressure from outside influences and the dollar is weak this type of criticism is obnoxious it does more harm than good for image of the country sincerely adam johnstone rr 1 stouffville talented saxophonist entertains children on friday morning paul brodie a concert sax ophonist entertained the children in
