millbrook was founded the name of buttonville was given to the hamlet when a post office was applied for and there was already a hamlet named mill- brook established in cavan township the first the river closer to the road by 1850 there were 14 houses in buttonville there were carpen ters storekeepers a weaver a shoemaker a painter a brick- maker a surveyor a lutheran minister farmers and laborers children living in the hamlet went to school section no 5 at browns corners on hwy 7 then in 1872 a new brick school was built closer to the village and by this time there were three churches lutheran methodist and presbyterian and three stores the village was named after major john button who was of a military family in the united states he settled here in 1808 ac quiring over 200 acres of land he became leader of the best orga nized cavalry troop in markham township which fought in the war of 1812 his men were known as captain buttons troop of the mar kham dragoons they were well equipped and had smart uni forms they took the rebel side in the upper canada rebellion of 1837 of the baldwin family men tioned they were absentee land lords who sometimes lived here hon robert baldwin was a father of responsible government in up per canada around 1850 this areas heritage is impor tant and the hamlet of buttonvil le which has many of the original homes still maintained
