tribune january 29 1986 a13 patronage claim angers uxbridge mayor by chris shanahan uxbridge twp mayor gerri lynn oconnor has seen red over a a council members hint that a township appointment smacks of patronage the mayor claimed any sugges tion that former ward 4 councillor sandy ewens committee of adjustment posting was a politic al favor is completely out of line he mr ewen is a person who was highly qualified in that field mayor oconnor said in a tele phone interview monday it cer tainly has nothing to do with pat ronage but ward 1 councillor cal av ery isnt so sure he said his opposition to mr ewens committee selection is in keeping with a promise made to constituents during the nov 12 municipal election campaign the councillor said he doesnt mind an excouncillor sitting on a nonpaying committee but feels its different when the post pays a wage as does the commitee of adjustment members of this planning panel receive 30 per meeting and the chairman 40 it looks a little bad mr av ery said it looks like were sup porting the old group mayor oconnor stressed that the top priority when filling a posi tion on the committee of adjust ment is to choose the best repre sentative for the township amendments to the planning act now allow for a municipality to appoint seven adjustment members instead of five uxbridge townships increase to seven members this term is de signed to spread the committees representation evenly throughout the township according to the mayor she made the original re commendation to council at thursdays meeting of coun cil mr avery was unsuccessful in his attempt to have the commit tee of adjustment appointment withdrawn from a bylaw dealing with several municipal posts and when his tabling motion failed to gain a seconder he cal led for a recorded vote on the com plete bylaw councillor avery was the only dissenting voice in a 61 decision i dont think the ratepayers should have to pay for two extra members the ward 1 repre sentative said afterward the issue he added is a mat ter of principle to me and has nothing to do with the personal in tegrity of any former elected offi cial mr avery earlier objected successfully to another past coun- cillors naming to uxbridge townships land division com mittee mr ewen a former chairman of the townships planning and development committee retired from municipal politics at the end of the
