a8 tribune january 22 198 late donald sim qc church filled for service by edward cassavoy markham a memorial service for donald sim re spected lawyer and longtime resident of markham was held at markbam baptist church thursday afternoon the spoken word reflected on the private public and business life of this outstanding markham citizen mr sim died suddenly at his home on church street jan 12 he was 58 as many smiles of rememberance as tears of remorse could be seen on the faces of friends relatives and collegues who filled the sanctuary pastor douglas sherwood reminded the congregation that the service was arranged by members of the sim family not as a time of mourning but a celebration of hope he was a giant in the legal profession a private and public man with a noble and generous style remembered justice hugh gibson justice gibson presented a distinguished list of professional milestones in mr sims business career after receiving his bachelor of science degree in 1949 from queens university kingston and attending osgoode hall mr sim was called to the bar of ontario in 1953 and was appointed a queens council in 1964 mr sim also had served as a lecturer at osgoode hall law school x don sim was active in the community a member of mar kham baptist church for 30 years and a deacon in the congrega tion he headed the legal and patent firms of sim hughes and sim mcburney of toronto his work as an industrial properties and patent lawyer made him one of the most respected in his field in the world mr gibson said always a gentleman but most of all he will be remembered as a gentleman rodger t hughes a business collegue preferred to remem ber the humorous side of mr sims interactions with people i think he was the greatest industrial properties lawyer in canada hughes said and i can only remember one time when he lost a case because of himself that was when he had to prove the strength of a certain companys door jam in court and did this by standing on it he lost members of mr sims family smiled when mr hughes men tioned that don was a sportsman of sorts a member of the hidden valley snowfence removal team but mr hughes said don sim touched most peoples lives by his ability to make everyone feel like a special friend and by always taking the time to listen hughes ended his reminicences by telling how one incident at the office reflected mr sims view of life and friends he asked me after one time we were talking to leave the door open when i left because he said someone nice might come by and say something pleasant to him neighborly notes white
