p16 weekender october 5 1985 reesor park a giantkiller students at markhams reesor park public school must be wishing their facility went to grade 9 in fact if the school went that one year further it might well have won wednesdays invita tional crosscountry meet at don valley junior high school in met ro toronto as it was the 28 grade 6 7 and 8 students who took part in the huge 600 participants competition had to settle for a second place behind the host school reesor finished with 31 points six behind don valley but take away the role of don valleys seniors and the school had only 27 points the kids did really well said andrew bos one of the cross country coaches we just went there for experience and to see how wed do against city teams were so proud of them to go out side our area and do that well reesor students topped the list in three divisions heather hamilton was the first junior girl to cross the finish line darla cooper came in second with kim orr in fifth spot and heather vaughan sixth that gave reesor the overall junior girls title the school sent only four in termediate girls but that was enough to give it the section vic tory tracey stewart was first terri vaughan sixth fiona ten- nant seventh and elizabeth forde 13th reesor also tied for first in the intermediate boys category with clint cooper finishing in top spot kevin green was seventh darren crawford 22nd and brian wamboldt 23rd junior boys competition proved to be the toughest with reesor taking fifth place overall scott candlish was the top finisher in 11th place dave rudy was 22nd adam lamarre 32nd this huron heights ball carrier during tuesdays football game at markham dis trict high school a good second half from defen ders like these plus some awesome running by iain forster allowed markham to post a 289 victory sjoerd witteveen forster just call him the scoring machine by francis king sports editor just call him the scoring- machine yes iain forster has done it again backed up by a rejuven ated secondhalf defensive effort forster led the markham district high school mdhs senior foot ball team to its third straight vic tory a 289 decision over new markets huron heights secon dary school tuesday afternoon the statistical story shows the true extent of the fourthyear seniors dominance markham piled up four touchdowns and 304 yards in offence forster contri buted three of those majors and 170 yards in rushing on only 11 carries his first two were on 60yard gallops in the first quarter that put the locals ahead 136 mazzo- lis major came on a thirdquarter 25yard run while forster finished off the scoring with a 20- yard dash in the final frame forster also booted three con verts and a single as well his presence helped the rest of the offence have more suc cess on its own huron heights would key on him and allow others like brian mcmaster who gained jim monk 57 yards on seven carries and nick mazzoli 40 yards and one td on three carries to do some damage all these accomplishments mean offensive coach ed curry is running out of superlatives to de scribe forster offensively iain was out standing and nick gives us a whole new element he pointed out on iains second major i think its fair to say he ran through all 12 defensive guys and once people key on him nick can really hurt them still the one offensive clement markham is sadly lacking is a passing game between them pivots mark esdale and dave whitt tossed only 13 passes and eight of them went incomplete with jim monk catching three others of course its not like mdhs is dying on the vine without a throw ing game but its an equal part of the sport and certainly makes the average contest more exciting defensively markham again needed half the game to get going in that time the opposition was able to score one major and gain 74 of its 100 yards in offence the defence was really flat in the first half confirmed defen sive coach myron dnes huron was pushing us around on the line but i didnt really make any adjustments i just told the guys to mentally get into the game apparently the players fol lowed instructions in the second half because they gave up only 22 yards on the ground and six in the air paul takahashi led the way with 10 tackles while dean gor don and scott welsh had five apiece gordon and mike man ilas also had an interception each by francis king sports editor milliken teacher sharon craw ford says 26mile marathons are a lot different from her 10- kilometre distance specialty but that didnt stop her from being the first woman to cross the finish line at torontos recent miller marathon the 29yearold runner who teaches at mother teresa sepa rate school made the miller event only her fourth marathon in four years nevertheless as the top female finisher she took home a 2500 canadian track and field asso ciation scholarship and a chance to participate in januarys ber muda marathon ail expenses paid crawford didnt take the top position until 12 miles into the competition when she passed marjorie watt saying she didnt want to fade near the end craw ford kept up a fairly conservative pace her finishing time was two hours 50 minutes and four seconds not a great time but it still beat her previous marathon best by six seconds and that time could have been even better but she had to stop and tie up a shoe i knew marjorie watt was going to be there and i knew shed be my main competition craw ford recalled but she ended up dropping out after i passed her that was the big turning point af ter passing her i knew the race could be mine it was euphoric coming up bloor st to the finish line she continued there was so much support for the first woman and from my running club the toron to longboat roadrunners but unlike many runners she didnt pull a collapsing act at the finish line fit people dont collapse at the end was her bpinion its part of the training you dont get fas ter but you become better at re covering this is crawfords first marathon victory the former st patricks separate school teacher has won 10km runs be fore including last years union- ville festival competition theres a lot more strategy in running marathons she pointed out in a 10km event you just go for it now you cant use that method in a marathon you have to pace yourself crawfords used to the shorter distances but this win seems to be spurring her on to compete in more 26mile distances shes considering a shot at the upcom ing new york marathon as well as the bermuda event sharon crawford top woman marathoner but before that its back to 10- km races where good finishes in previous runs mean she can take part expensefree in the avon in ternational race two months from now in mexico meanwhile two members of the markham centaurs running club also participated in the miller marathon both george long- muir and gordon cole crossed the finish line in four hours and four minutes we just ran it as a training event for the washington dc marine corps marathon in five weeks said cole explaining the slow times 2 runs make difference two runs they were the only things standing between unionvilles peter mason realty team and the cham pionship of the annual oshawa umpires softball tourna ment last weekend unionville started well enough sweeping the first three outings by scoring 43 runs and allowing only six the only close contest was a matchup of
