m m teacher in race claremont after a lengthy career in the clas sroom lyn craig wants to con tinue her involvement in the educational system this time as a public school trustee shes challenging incumbent linda carder for pickerings ward 3 spot on the durham board of education mrs craig said that a trustee position should be regarded as a fulltime job and if elected shell treat it that way its a job rather than a poli tical step she explained and mrs craig hopes to utilize the experience gained during her 25year teaching career during which time she viewed first hand such shortcomings as financial waste and unsafe clas sroom conditions the candidate doesnt want to lose sight of what she feels is the school systems main purpose to educate the students she resigned her teaching position at claremont public school last year but still tutors some area pupils on a parttime basis and its surprising to her just how many young people re quire this extra instructional time mrs craig sees bill 30 and the extension of separate school funding as a step in the wrong direction she doesnt believe the maintenance of two educational systems public and separate is in the best interest of the student i personally believe we should be heading toward amal gamating th two systems in stead of separating them she said i think most students would be better off a number of more personal concerns have been identified through her discussions with ward 3 ratepayers including split grades and their affect on children classroom overcrow ding busing problems plus the fact that over 50 per cent of the tax dollar is spent on education mrs craig and husband norm live on durham region road 5 just east of claremont they have three daughters susan 19 catherine 17 and 15-year- old sharon she began her teaching career in scarborough moving to the old claremont school in 196465 mrs craig then took time off to raise her family be fore returning to teach at xkrjmnontp for another tion is providing 34 million for separate school funding over the past seven years trus tee carder has sat on the follow ing committees property trans portation finance budget salary negotiation affirmative action early school leavers plus several ad hoc bodies she was elected by her peers for three years to the association of large school boards of ontario alsbo ex- ecutive as memberatlarge as a result of this position the trustee was selected to sit on the execu tive of the ontario school board council mrs carder said her experience in education at the local and pro- vincial level has afforded her an opportunity to be aware of and in volved in broader educational issues such as bill 82 special education she also chaired a committee for alsbo on the issue of post secondary opportunities for general level students reporting to the minister of education and the school representative meets with trustees from other large boards to discuss trends in salary negotiations and work conditions of staff with the implementation of the health and safety act her most recent concern is the extension of funding to separate schools and its impact in relation to other provincial changes in emphasis and funding at the local level the board member has worked to make the grade 7 and 8 family studiesshop program coed and available to all students shes also been in volved in reducing class sizes in creasing special classes for all students gifted through hand icapped increasing secretarial time in small schools providing academic resource teachers in all schools introducing special funding for text books library re sources and computers and im proving building maintenance all of these cost money mrs carder said the board sets the priorities based on serving the student programs already estab lished and ensuring quality teaching in uptodate facilities ciaremnts linda carder will attempt to retain her ward 3 pickering seat on the durham board of education
