kelly connelly the stouffville minor peewee panthers were on the prowl last weekend coach alfons rubbens and his tenacious team of black cats captured the stouffville cup soccer tournament for the second straight year by blanking markham 10 last sunday that the panthers net remained vacant throughout the five game sweep save for one ball whitby happened to jam in during the preliminaries was no surprise the stouffville club has probably the best de fensive line in the york region and nobody knows that better than mar kham the yellow shirts have crossed paws with the cats four times this season and failed to pull off a win the wounds were still fresh from the panthers york region cup victory over markham just two weeks ago another 10 skinning decided that con test the stouffville blitz began early satur day when the team shut out st andrews and agincourt 50 and 60 respectively the cats let one marker by in game three of the preliminary round but still managed to graze ajax 31 panther centremidfielder trevis white who figured prominently throughout the tourney generated most of the crucial plays that ended in goals midfielder ernie shiga was another clever playmaker s in the semi finals stouffville clawed whitby 30 markham opened the tourney with a 71 annihilation of whitby it started slowly grabbing a 21 firsthalf edge on tallies by todd gerrard and aaron mcclure gerrard netted his second and third in the final frame while joe caricari notched two in a row and rod pina completed the goal parade game two saw the club gain a 20 half- time lead on the stouffvillle royals then hang on for a 31 decision andrew morrow did the firsthalf damage and ryan stevenson completed the offence the third outing was markhams tough est up til then the best it could manage against a tough barrie squad was a score less draw game four went to the locals but it took peter mizis overtime victory to give mar kham a 32 decision over ajax mcclure opened the scoring only to have ajax knot the count on a penalty shot ajax took the lead in the second half but this time david scott did the heroics send ing the game into overtime by scoring with only 30 seconds to play mizis winner came very late in the first overtime period the field looked ready for another wood- bridge final except this time markham was zealous to kick some retribution inthe first 20 minutes baxters boys almost did rubbens felt the heat it was a hot day and it was a tight tense emotional game markham was desperate to win so there was a lot of tight marking man to man said the skipper but almost is not enough against the black cats sluga doused the markham fire late in the first half with a 35yard free kick chalk one up for markham chalk up round one in what should be a long exciting rivalry between markham district high school mdhs and unionvil le high school to the wellestablished mdhs markham won the firstever girls junior basketball game between the two schools by an easy 3211 score the first half was all markhams it built up a 102 lead after the first quarter and by halftime more than doubled it to 234 however unionville came into its own in the second half it was outscorcd only 50 in the third quarter and actually won the fourth quarter 74 carolyn mcleod led the mdhs scoring parade with 10 points while allison tun- nicliff contributed eight for unionville two points each came from marilyn dob- son mary ingram gillian casson tam my vine and shawne davey several factors influenced the final score according to unionville coach lyn aird she pointed out that not only was the game her girls first together but it was also their first in a fullsize gym unionvilles gyms arent ready yet so the junior squad has been working out at william berczy public school on carleton road another problem is the defence aird said most of her roster has experience in zone defending rather than a mantoman setup she used the latter concept against mdhs and i think they found that frus trating despite this aird said her girls looked great they have real determination markham coach doug zack was fairly pleased with the outcome at this point his major concern is form ing a cohesive style we still ha ve to work on getting the girls to think a little more we need more of a team aspect but that usually comes with time markhams other game was a lopsided 536 exhibition win over markhams new catholic high school brother andre mcleod kathy and nancy donkersley netted eight points each seniors george krauss mdhs seniors opened the season by gaining a 2414 halftime lead over bayvicw then cruising to a 4831 vic tory karina watson led the attack with 20 points game two was even easier with the kraus crew piling up a 304 halftime edge then cruising to a 6513 annihilaion of lang- staff lynn taylors 13 points paced the off ence with mclanic kay adding 12 and car rie lanning nine
