supports mayor to the editor at a recent meeting of the whitchurch- stouffville rural ratepayers association there was deep concern expressed regard ing the number of subdivisions being prop- osed for the rural areas and their effect on the environment some of the people were astounded to learn that our present planning board con sists solely of council members in other words council is the planning board and the planning board is composed only of councillors this seems a little like the judge being the jury and the only member of the jury is the judge what does this actually mean basically it means the planning board makes recommendations to council and then council makes the final decisions but council makes its decisions based on the recommendations that they them selves as the planning board have put forth this is a ridiculous situation that has existed for ten or twelve years the gathering was told that this is one of the situations that our mayor tom wood proposes to correct if given the mandate to continue on nov 12 he feels the planning board should be comprised of one resident from each of the six wards plus two councillors by their own admission several council lors have indicated that on occasions they have failed to even view the proposed land severance sites and have relied on the opinion of their fellow council members and have voted on this basis it was further revealed that mayor wood intends to put a similar arrangement in place with the parks and recreation com mittee that for two years has also been comprised solely of council members again there would be one member of the public from each ward two councillors plus one member from each of the various local sports organizations that use the faci lities in this way the public would be partici pating in the government we heartily approve of and applaud mayor wood for his stand on these issues it is a big step in the right direction thalhas been long overdue bravo mayor wood sincerely the whitchurchstouffville rural ratepayers association psan invitation is extended to all resi dents to attend an allcandidates meeting in the ballantrae centre monday oct 28 at 8 pm
