by injuries tenyearold ron coles has been plagued by facial paralysis partial deafness and double vision since a june 11 playground accident at claremont public school the boys mother linda coles left praises rons courage during the trying re covery period in an accompanying letter to the tribune she also urges parents to become more aware of school activities in order to prevent similar mishaps special programs offered by uxpool staff members dear editor i would like to take this opportunity to thank your paper and chris shanahan for your coverage and personal interest in my son ron coles regarding the accident on june 11 at claremont public school i now have a few personal things i would like to say the accident i feel should never have happened but it did and my son is after one operation still left with full para lysis to the right side of his face partial deafness in his left ear and double vision he is now looking at the possibility of at- least two more operations i have been told that he may never regain his full facial functions but time is on our side from an active healthy 10yearold boy he now has to live a life of very little activ ity since his operation his whole personal ity has changed he is not the same boy who left for school on june 11 he cant go bike riding swimming etc it breaks my heart to see him at times looking so lost and con fused we now live one day at a time and i cant even begin to say what an emotional strain this has been on all of us its going to be a long hard road for ron but we will make it together we have to ron himself is holding out very well and i am very proud of him he is a very courageous little boy and is a source of strength to me i said the accident should never have happened and i feel i have a right to make this statement what were unsecured monkey bars doing in a school play ground in the first place they were re moved the day of the accident but why not before i found out later they had been that way for at least a year why does it take something like this to get some action i almost lost my son but it could have been someone elses parents i urge ll of you to take a more active interest in your childs school go to pta meetings i know i will and ill do my best to see that another accident of this nature doesnt hap pen to another child who may not be so lucky you all must feel as i do that a school is one of the few places left where our chil dren can be safe now im not so sure i also ask the question why was he moved from the place of the accident and walked into the school where he col lapsed vomiting blood with blood also running out of his ear there should be more firstaid knowledge given to school staff and i will fight for that it could save a life as the saying goes united we stand divided we fall let us all fight for the rights of the children i hope and pray no mother will ever receive a phone call like the one i got just 20 minutes after your child leaves for school i still relive that day and i always will i would also like if i may to give my heartfelt thankyous to rev cameron watts and claremont baptist church the stouffviue ambulance department ron nies friends and their families who have helped hime cope through this very diffi cult time in his life and to all the people in claremont for their kind thoughts and help fulness towards my family a very special
