residents dont want new name weekender july 27 1985 p3 braithwaite rd in unionville may be here to stay the roads name was supposed to change to hemingway cres because some resi dents have complained it is a confusing continuation of hemingway cres to carl- tori rd but objection from braithwaite rd residents nipped this plan in the bud at a town council meeting in may it was decided that the name should change to hemingway cres because of several reasons presented to council by a resident of that street john gilbart told the council that emergency services have a difficult time- local scouts at jamboree thirty boy scouts from the markham area attended a jamboree with scouts from as far away as australia the sixth canadian jamboree was held earlier this month at the guelph lake con servation area where more than 12000 scouts venturers and leaders camped out children from the united kingdom nigeria and italy also attended boys who attended from the markham area included evan hargraves robert ahara andrew sankey sean hollwell chris reed david pogue keith bain nicholas baird shawn black jonathon feather chris jeares and jean francois paradis also attending were john wallace mike shannon david ahara jason lans- downe david getson doug birtles blair seeley ian fleming jake macandrew lee hargraves anthony searle steven ross steve williams kevin chocorlan murray macdonald ian maclaren ken meade and peter webster in addition 12 rovers from participa tion house attended the opening celebra tions with govenor general jeanne sauve officiating finding houses at the end of hemingway cres where braithwaite rd begins guests and delivery people have a hard time finding addresses at the end of hemingway cres it is a waste to have two street names where one could exist and that of the six houses on braithwaite rd one had sold recently and two are up for sale mr gilbarts argument seemed logical to the council and it was accepted but a resident of braithwaite rd attended last tuesdays meeting to speak against the name change larry hutzul of 5 braithwaite rd said he would agree to the change only if the town agreed to pay the expenses for changing his address mr hutzul said this would cost between 500 and 1000 wayne and janet patterson of 11 braith waite rd sent a letter to the town asking that the street name not change because of the inconvenience to residents and because it is apparent no useful purpose can be served in changing the name ward 4 councillor al rayner said i think it makes common sense to have the street named all one name and now is the time to do it but ward 3 councillor fred cox was more cautious addressing mr hutzul theres a variance of opinions here we heard mr gilbart in may now youre here tonight saying theres no problem i think we should sit down and see if there really is a problem the matter was given over to the union ville subcommittee for further discussion open sunday the markham public libraries may be open on sundays in the future a survey will be distributed to residents early in august with copies of the town of markham parks and recreation guide the library board is investigating the possibility of introducing down on zoning violations by paula crowell staff reporter the town of markham has decided to crack down on violaters of zoning bylaws again bylaws cannot be constantly enforced because there are too many of them to be monitored by the four bylaw enforcement officers and one supervisor employed by the town but when councils attention is drawn to bylaw violations the officers start laying charges councils main concern is in the use of industrial space for retail purposes manu facturers and warehousers in the esna park industrial area south of 14th ave be tween warden ave and hwy 404 are using too much of their space selling to the pub lic which violates the zoning bylaw they are also displaying sandwich board signs by the side of the road to advertise their retail sales another illegal practice some car dealerships parking cars on the boulevard where landscaping is sup posed to be will also come under fire jim brown of the towns planning de partment said the bylaw- enforcement officers work on the basis of complaints you dont patrol the streets looking for violated bylaws but he added theyre there to be enforced not ignored ward 3 councillor fred cox said be tween the complaints they receive from the councillors and those from the general pub lic the officers are kept hopping mayor carole bell explained that bylaw enforcement officers lay charges on offending businesses whenever possible but usually these charges result in a fine which does little to discourage the offen ders bylaw enforcement officers dont work on weekends when warehouses do most of their retail selling and are therefore una ware of some broken bylaws but every so often attention is drawn to them when theyve gotten out of hand she said call display advertising 2942200 or lenni hull
