a most unusual clinical condition two minutes after the end cre dits i couldnt remember where i had been for the previous hour and a half the movie is so lightweight that it doesnt register one reason for this is that the man with one red shoe is a mishmash of recent american comedies its makers seem to have made the most of a premise they in herited from the french film the tall blond man with one red shoe of which this is an american remake by casting americans in roles they perfected in amer ican films thus tom hanks as a concert violinist who accidentally becomes the focus of sur veillance by a rogue element of the cia plays the same kind of softspoken eccen tric guy he did in splash as in splash he is pursued by a beautiful woman it was a mermaid in that sly comedy but here its a cia agent played by stoic lori singer costar dabney colemans depiction of a ruthless sexist cia chief echoes the the similarly ruthless and sexist bosses he played in nine to five and his snappy tv- series buffalo bill meanwhile costar charles durning embellishes on the power ful but corrupt figures he played in mass appeal and the best little whorehouse in texas the predictability of these three perfor mers is not so much a flaw as they all offer competent work but it is kind of dull play ing it safe by keeping the spotlight on the proven personas of these players keeps it off carrie fisher princess leia in the star wars movies as a frumpy flutist and jim belushi as her drumplaying husband although both have a spontaneity that makes them the funniest people in the film as directed by stan dragoti and photo graphed by richard kline this low vol tage farce can be credited with reeling off a few sparks with a hightoned slick style that emphasizes shadows snapshot edit ing and a camera that just wont shoot a scene straight on the stylishness is nicely applied espe cially when the cias goons first go after hanks although the film is occasionally amusing its style is more memorable than its content markville pg markville the goonies kids will have the most fun with this soso adventure about seven kids searching for buried treasure in caverns beneath their hometown pg
